PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico University rodeo continues the 2023-24 season with a trip to Snyder, Texas as they will compete inside the "Coliseum" at a competition hosted by Western Texas College. Before the Greyhounds head to the Lone Star state, please take a look at the Three Barrel Preview:
1.) Moving Up The Ranks: The Greyhounds posted one of their strongest rodeos of the 2023-24 campaign two weeks ago in Sweetwater, Texas. The women's team was aided with their third fourth place finish this year and saw
Shacie Marr earn first place in the goat tying. The men's side earned points from
Zachary Townsend who tied for first with a 3.9s run after the long round. Two other Hounds,
Couy McBride and
Jordyn Everson, made the Saturday night short-go round.
2.) In The Coliseum: The location of this weekend's rodeo is unique as the "Coliseum" is designed as a basketball gymnasium. The seating capacity is 3,890 and the crowd is right up front and the arena is not as wide as several of the locations the Hounds see every season. The setup will likely require quicker times in events like goat tying and barrel racing. ENMU women's rodeo took first place in Snyder back in 2021 – their fourth win at an event hosted by WTC. Marr has seen success in barrels in her time as a Greyhound at this arena. She has made the short go in two of the last three years.
3.) Run After Run: The pace of the Western Texas College rodeo should go quick as there is not an official performance slot in the evening session. Instead, the student-athletes compete in slack throughout the first two and a half days before the short round slated for 7 p.m. CT Saturday night. ENMU expects 38 entries from 25 different student-athletes. One of the events to watch for is team roping as there will be a Greyhound in seven of the 118 runs of the event. Four of those seven teams include teammates on both sides. Fans interested in viewing the rodeo stream can watch via the Western Texas College rodeo
