Big Inning Plagues Baseball, 14-9

The Lions scored seven runs in the second inning from seven hits

PORTALES, N.M. – A big inning sunk Eastern New Mexico Baseball, 14-9, on Saturday evening against UAFS at Greyhound Baseball Field. The Greyhounds slip to 14-23, with a 12-23 conference standing. Meanwhile the Lions improve to 18-17overall, holding the same LSC record.

After a Willie Ponce sacrifice fly got ENMU on the board in the opening inning, the Lions put up seven runs in the top of the second to take its first lead. UAFS scored all of the runs from seven hits in the inning along with a walk. A double and a single tied the game at 1-1, then three singles, a double, and a triple shifted the score to 7-1. ENMU plated a pair of runs during the 3rd inning, with Luciano Terilli and Demetrio Archuleta combining singles to score the run.  Daniel Pruitt doubled later in the inning to make the score 7-3. Both teams picked up one run during the 4th frame, but UAFS added four runs in the 6th inning to take a sizeable lead, 12-4. With back-to-back walks starting the inning, a three-run home run widened the margin, then a wild pitch made the score 12-4.

Eastern took back a run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth, but the Lions plated a pair of runs in the 7th frame (14-5). Pruitt registered a sacrifice fly in the 7th, then Ponce had a bases loaded triple to score three runs for the Greyhounds in the 8th inning. A scoreless 9th inning secured a 14-9 victory for UAFS.

FROM THE SOURCE

"Nice to put a few runs on the board today, but still fell short," said Head Baseball Coach Riley Price. "Too many errors no paper that are happening and we did not limit the free bases on the mound. It says we out-hit them tonight, but it didn't feel like it," said Price. "We continue to show bits and pieces of how we can perform at a high level, but it's not happening together or as a team. I hope we can start showing some consistency and work ourselves out of this self-dug hole," said Price. "Terilli continues to be consistent and impressive anytime he touches the field and shouts out to (Jonathan) Baileys tonight for a great night at the plate,".

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Baileys had a career night going 3-3, reaching base in all five of his plate appearances. Ponce provided a career best two triples in a game.
  • The Greyhounds play the series finale against the Lions tomorrow, with the first pitch expected for 1 p.m.
