PORTALES, N.M. – After 52 runs combined and 49 hits between the two teams, Eastern New Mexico Baseball picked up the getaway game against UAFS, 28-24, on Sunday afternoon at a windy Greyhound Baseball Field. The Greyhounds improve to 15-23 overall on the season, while sitting at 13-23 in conference action. Meanwhile, the Lions shift to 18-18 this season with the same conference record.
Both teams combined for 21 runs in the opening three innings, including a nine-run 2
nd inning from ENMU.
Tucker Gideon single home a pair of runs in the first inning, but UAFS put six runs on the board in the top of the second. After
Dominick Cassell and
Landon Pyles reached base to begin the 3
rd,
Luciano Terilli hit a three-run home run over the center field fence (6-5 UAFS). Shortly after,
Beau Preston had a three-run homer of his own to put ENMU ahead 8-6.
Willie Ponce and
Daniel Pruitt both singled before the Preston home run. A sacrifice fly and a pair of RBI singles moved the score to 11-6 ENMU.
After the Lions scored two runs in the 3
rd and 4
th inning, the Greyhounds pushed their lead to 15-10 with a four-run 4
th inning. Four straight singles scored a run, then a sacrifice fly from
Demetrio Archuleta brought in another run. Preston cleaned up the frame with a 2-RBI single. The Lions brought the score tied, 15-15, scoring five runs in the 5
th inning from two hits. Eastern immediately responded with four runs from five hits, with
Cooper Hamilton starting the inning with a ground-rule double. Cassell followed with a RBI-double, then a two-run double from Ponce, and a RBI-double from Archuleta ended the inning. However, the Lions restored a 21-19 lead with six runs during the 6
th inning. A grand slam home run and two RBI-doubles gave the Lions the lead.
The Greyhound didn't back down, responding with six runs from for hits during the bottom of the 6
th. Cassell doubled home a run, then Terilli gave Eastern the lead back with a 3-run home run. Pruitt followed shortly after with a two-run home run to push the lead to 25-21 after six innings. Eastern plated four more runs in the 7
th inning, while the Lions scored four runs in the 8
th frame. UAFS did bring the tying run to the plate, but a flyout with the bases loaded left the score at 28-24 ENMU. The scoring fest ended at 28-24 in favor of the Greyhounds after nine innings.
NOTABLE STATS
- Every batter recorded multiple hits for the Greyhounds, totaling 30 in the game to score 28 runs. The Lions picked up 24 runs from 19 hits with 12 walks.
- Terilli (5-5, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 2 BB, 5 R) was the driving force from the lead-off position. Cassell, Gideon, and Pyles all finished with four hits, while Pyles and Cassell each scored five times. Ponce, Preston, and Pruitt each had three hits in the game, while Preston supplied five RBIs.
- Every greyhound finished with an RBI in the game, and eight different hitters had multiple RBIs.
- Zach Raichel earned the win for the Greyhounds, while Adrian Rubio picked up a save. Six different pitchers took the mound for Eastern: Terilli, Marc Rios, Raichel, Maddux Edmonson, Griffin Almond, and Adrian Rubio
- Junior Torres is charged with the loss, giving up the lead in the 6th inning. Riley Lowey started the game, with Lukas Petross, Luke Davenport, Tanner Callahan, and Logan Grant all taking the rubber.

"Hard fought win today to break the losing skid," said Head ENMU Baseball Coach Riley Price. "Proud of how we stayed in it and continued to fight back with quality at bats. It was a good team win that we definitely needed," said Price. 'So proud of our guys that came off the bench this weekend and how they performed. (Jonathan) Bailey's yesterday and Dominick Cassell having himself a great day all around today," said Price. "I can't say enough about Luciano Terilli as he continues to step up and lead our team at the plate and on the mound. Starting to see better performances from guys that need to step up and that will be high for us going into the last stretch of the season," said Price.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Greyhounds supplied a school record of 30 hits in the game, breaking the previous mark of 29 hits set against West Texas A&M in a 33-14 victory. Additionally, ENMU set a program best 49 total bases during the game. Other notable statistics include: 28 runs scored (2nd most all-time) and 28 RBIs (2nd most all-time).
- The final conference meeting between the two programs was the highest scoring game in series history. 52 runs combined is the highest scoring game in all of Division II so far this season.
- Terilli tied a program record for RBIs in a single game with nine, recently achieved by Jonatan Clough on 4/13/23. Five hits from the Greyhounds P/DH are tied for 3rd most in a single game, while a pair of home runs is also in the top-10 in a single game.
- Additionally, Terilli landed in the top-10 for total bases (11), tying current teammate Nyles Duren for 6th place all-time in a single game.
- Five runs scored from Terilli, Cassell, and Pyles are all tied for the second most in a single game, trailing Endy Villalona's six runs scored against Lane on Feb. 3rd, 2017.
- In terms of single season bests, the Greyhounds had season marks for: runs (28), hits (30), RBIs (28), home runs (4), and sacrifice flies (3).
- Individually, Gideon and Hamilton set team highs with seven at bats, while Terilli set a mark for RBIs (9) and set a season best for runs scored alongside Pyles and Cassell (5).
- Terilli had a career day with their first home runs as a Greyhound, going 5-5 (season high for hits), scoring five times (season best), and nine RBIs (reached base in all seven of their plate appearances.
- Preston posted a season best five RBIs, ending a 15-game stint without a RBI. Pyles racked up a career best four hits and five runs scored during the game.
- Making just their second start of the season, Cassell had a season best for hits (4), runs scored (5), and RBIs (3).
- For home runs Terilli hit their first two of the season, Preston has his team high third of the campaign, and Pruitt launched their second.
- The Greyhounds now turn their attention to Oklahoma Christian for its next series, facing off against the Eagles in a four-game series in Oklahoma City next weekend, beginning on Friday, April 12.
