SNYDER, Texas – For a seventh time this season Eastern New Mexico women's rodeo earned a top-six performance while the men's program earned their third top-ten finish.
Five different entries featuring Greyhounds made the Saturday night marquee event with a handful just missing the cut into the short round.
For the eighth time this year,
Shacie Marr made a short-go in at least one event. At the Western Texas College rodeo, she made two short-go's. In goat tying, she continues to excel as she split 5
th/6
th with a 6.8s run. She took solo fifth after a 7.1s result Saturday night.
Marr followed that performance by racking up more points in team roping. She partnered with
Justin McCormick and took sixth in the long round with a time of 5.8s. Not too many groups earned a time in Saturday's finale, so a 23.8s was good enough to clinch fifth. Since Marr totaled so many points for the Hounds, she was named the rodeo's all-around winner. The Hounds top cowgirl entering the week almost made it into the short-go in the barrels with a time of 14.15s, but she was 0.04s shy from earning that bid.
"She's a pretty tough competitor," remarked head coach
Albert Flinn on Marr. "She made two nice runs."
One other Hound was part of a team to make the short round in team roping.
Blase Steffen partnered with Ranger College's Tyan Johnson to finish with a 6.3s time in the long round.
The breakaway was one of the brightest events for ENMU.
Greeley Eastep split first with six other competitors. The run helped her clinch fifth overall after a 3.9s run Saturday night.
Steer wrestling saw
Zachary Townsend split 2
nd/3
rd going 4.7s, but he missed out with points in the next round for the second rodeo in as many weeks. His teammate
Rowdy Norwood missed on the opportunity to compete in the next round as the first one off the list with a 6.3s result.
"For a small kid, he bull dogs pretty good," said head coach
Albert Flinn on Townsend after the competition. "He's going to continue to improve and has a couple more years."
One of the closest competitions this week came in goat tying as three ENMU student-athletes finished in the top-30, but did not make the short-go.
Greeley Eastep (7.7s),
Jordyn Everson (8.0s), and
Tabby Tomlinson (8.0s) all competed in the event with top-30 nods.
ENMU has two regular season competitions remaining. The next one is set for Howard College in Big Spring, Texas April 11-13.
