PORTALES, N.M. – Following All-American accolades during the 2023-24 season,
Alex Williams and
Grizell Scarlett of ENMU Track & Field have been named Male and Female Greatest Greyhounds, respectively.
Williams becomes the 79
th Male Greatest Greyhound in the awards history, while Scarlett becomes the 45
th Female Greatest Greyhound in the university's history.
With Williams and Scarlett claiming the honors, the track & field program has swept the award for the first time in the awards history. Williams joins Timothy Fredrick (2022-23 award winner) for track & field program taking home the award in back-to-back years for the first time. Meanwhile, Scarlett and
Tamia Smith (2022-23 winner, alongside Brook Leger (softball)) earn consecutive winners from track & field for the first time.
The Greatest Greyhound awards date back to 1940-41 on the men's side and 1978-79 on the women's side and is presented to a male and female Eastern New Mexico student-athlete every year that displayed the highest degree of athletic achievement, academic success, leadership qualities, community involvement and positive representation of Eastern New Mexico University. The award is voted on by ENMU head coaches and administrative staff.
Specializing in the javelin, Williams shined brightest on the national stage to conclude the 2024 season. Overall, the Kingston, Jamaica native holds the top five marks in the javelin for ENMU record books, building off a successful season in 2023 when they reached the national championships. The season began with Williams taking part in the 60 meters during the indoor season, racing four times and setting a personal best time of 7.07s at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic (2/2-3).
To start the outdoor season, Williams set a big marker with a personal best throw at the 2024 Willie Williams Classic (3/22-23), with a distance of 66.22m (217' 3"). The sophomore finished third in the meet, only behind a pair of University of Arizona competitors. The strong start continued with a 1
st place finish at the Greyhound Open (3/30, 63.10m – 207' 0") and at the John Jacobs Invitational (4/12-13), beating their school record with a toss of 66.90m (219' 6"). The recording breaking attempt came on their third throw, with a separation of 3.91m (12' 10") between first and second place and led to being awarded LSC Field Athlete of the Week (4/17).
At the Lone Star Conference Outdoor Championships, Williams rose to the occasion with their final throw traveling 66.42m (217' 11"), leaping into 2
nd place to secure a podium finish. The mark led to Williams garnering 2
nd Team All-Conference honors, with eight points towards team scoring. Despite just being short of their personal best, their 2
nd place best finish improved on their LSC Championship throw from the season prior, taking third place with a toss of 64.49m (211' 7") in 2023.
Their finest performance of the season came at the NCAA DII Outdoor National Championships (5/23-25), finishing the weekend with a new school record, personal best, USTFCCCA All-Region nod, and 1
st team All-American honors. Following the second round of throws, Williams stood in 9
th place and had one attempt to improve their mark before the top-nine throwers advanced. On their third attempt, Williams surpassed their career best with a throw of 68.49m (224' 8") to move into the Top-5 and secure 1
st team All-American status. At the conclusion of the second set of throws for the top-nine competitors, Williams finished in 6
th place scoring three points for team scoring, a year after taking 17
th at the 2023 national championships.
Qualifying for the NCAA Championships during the Indoor and Outdoor seasons, Scarlett made an important impact on the Greyhounds program in their first season. The sprinter booked their ticket to the national championships during the indoor season in the 60 meters, while advancing to the national stage for the 100 meters in the outdoor campaign.
In their first meet with the Greyhounds, JD Martin Invitational (12/9), Scarlett set a blistering time in the 60 meters (7.46s) to take first place in a field of five Division I sprinters. The performance garnered LSC Indoor Track Athlete of the Week (12/14). The Kingston, Jamaica native continued their high-level performances, taking first place in the 60 meters (7.50s) and 6
th place in the 200 meters (25.36s) at Rumble in the Jungle Invitational (1/19). Scarlett improved their time in the 60 meters (7.45s) at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational (2/9-10) to better their own school record (holds all top-five times for the 60 meters in program history). Finished regular season with provisional marks in the 60 meters and 200 meters.
At the Lone Star Conference Indoor Championships (2/23-24), Scarlett claimed 1
st team All-Conference honors, taking the gold in the 60 meters (7.49s), along with a 7
th place mark in the 200 meters (25.47s), and as a part of the 4x400 meter relay team with a 7
th place finish (4:00.16). Scarlett entered the top-five in program history all-time for the indoor 200 meters (25.09s, preliminary round) and the 4x400 meter relay. The freshman ended the indoor campaign, with USTFCCCA All-Region and 2
nd team All-American honors for the 60 meters, clocking a time of 7.46s in the prelims to finish 9
th at the 2024 DII Indoor National Championships (3/8-9).
The success continued into the 2024 outdoor season, beginning with a 4
th place finish in the 100 meters (11.35s) at the 2024 Willie Williams Classic (3/22-23) finishing behind a pair of professional runners and a Division I sprinter. Shortly after, Scarlett rewrote program history with a school record time of 11.35s in the 100 meters during a 2
nd place finish at the 2024 Jo Meaker Classic and Multi (4/4-6).
The sprinter turned in their best performances at the LSC Outdoor Championships (5/9-11), helping the team claim 3
rd place at the meet (program's best finish) and earn LSC 1
st team All-Conference. Scarlett took home 1
st place during the 100 meters (11.33s) setting a meet record during the wind-aided sprint. After helping the Greyhounds take 3
rd place in the 4x100 (46.47s), Scarlett clocked 24.02s in the 200 meters final to finish 4
th place. Earlier in the weekend, Scarlett posted a season best time the event (23.91s). They finished the season with USTFCCCA All-Region honors in the 100 meters, earning a spot to compete at the 2024 DII Outdoor National Championships (5/23-25).
