Late Goal Sinks Women's Soccer, 1-0

Western Colorado scored with just four minutes remaining in regulation

GUNNISON, COLO. – A goal with less than five minutes to play in regulation, doomed Eastern New Mexico Woman's Soccer (0-2-1) to a 1-0 road loss at the hands of Western Colorado (1-2-0) on Thursday evening at Katy O. Rady Field.  
 
Each team had their opportunities at goal in the first half, with more chances manifesting in the second half. The Mountaineers tested the Greyhounds with 20 shots and 12 shots on goal throughout the game, while the Greyhounds fired a season best 11 shots and seven shots on goal.

Rosie Willmott Joyce stood firm in the Greyhound net, repelling 11 shots on net in the to keep WCU off the scoreboard in the first 85 minutes. However, a 30+ yard thunderbolt of a shot rippled the back of the net in the 86th minute to give the home Mountaineers a late winner.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • 11 saves from Wilmott Joyce not only sets a career high but is tied for third in program history for saves in a game. Most recently, Samantha Jeffries achieved the feat against St. Edward's in 2022.
  • Sierra Villanueva and Sarah Tate both recorded two shots on goal, while Villanueva led all competitors with four shots.
  • WCU and ENMU met for just the fifth time in series history, with the Mountaineers beating the Greyhounds for the first time since 2014 in Denver, Colo.
