PORTALES, N.M. – An early goal and stalwart defense helped Eastern New Mexico Women's Soccer (1-2-1) secure their first victory of the season on Sunday afternoon against Colorado Christian (1-3-1) at Steve Loy Family Foundation Stadium.
With the Greyhounds first shot on goal,
Gaia Chies curled the ball into the top corner to give the Greyhounds the lead after just eight minutes. Chies combined with
Meghann Wingsutton just outside the 18-yard box to create the goalscoring opportunity.
In goal,
Rosie Willmott Joyce was not beaten, making seven saves in the 90 minutes, including six in the second half.
Sierra Villanueva and
Sofia Trejo joined Willmott Joyce in playing the full 90 minutes, anchoring the defense until the final whistle.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- Colorado Christian finished the match with the most chances, logging 14 shots with save on goal. ENMU only had a few chances but made the most of their three total shots and two shots on target.
- The Greyhounds bested the Cougars for the first time since 2007, and the first home win against Colorado Christian since 2005. The all-time series stands at 4-4 overall.
- Chies posted their first goal in a green and silver uniform, while Wingsutton recorded their first assist as a Greyhound.
- Several Greyhounds made their first start of the season: Brisa Franco, Louise Godden, Brooklyn Guajardo, and Jayden Romo,
- Eastern now go into conference action, welcoming West Texas A&M for its conference opener on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m from Steve Loy Family Foundation Stadium.
