PUEBLO, Colo. – Eastern New Mexico Volleyball faced a tough opening day at the 2024 Steel City showcase, dropping a pair of matches against Minnesota Crookston, 3-1, and Lake Superior State, 3-0, at Massari Arena.
UMC 3, ENMU 1 (13-25, 18-25, 25-18, 17-25)
Darcy Dodd led the Greyhounds with 11 kills during the match, missing a double-double by one dig.
Sophia Valdez (nine kills) and
Randi Crandall (eight kills) helped the offense, while
Cayla Reyes paced the team with 18 assists.
Defensively, Reyes led ENMU with 14 digs to earn a double-double.
Imahni Brown reached double-figures for digs (12), while Valdez and
Teryn Foote each had three total blocks.
LSSU 3, ENMU 0 (17-25, 19-25, 20-25)
Eastern had a balanced attack as Valdez (six kills),
Halle Sanders (five kills), Dodd and Crandall (four kills) led the attack.
Reyes eclipsed double digits with 12 assists, while Brown finished the match with a team high seven digs.
Valdez led the blocking effort with three, with Dodd and Reyes aiding the defense with six digs each.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORES
- The Greyhounds played the Golden Eagles (UMC) for just the second time in program history, with the all-time series standing at 1-1.
- Eastern matched up with Lake Superior State for the first time ever.
- Reyes recorded the first double-double of the season for the Greyhounds, during their collegiate debut.
- A handful of Greyhounds played their first game in an ENMU: Brown, Crandall, Abigayle Falefia, Brianna Hernandez, Korah Ives, Reyes, Nevaeh Rodriquez, and Angelina Sanchez.
- ENMU concludes the weekend with a pair of matchups against Cal. State East Bay (10:30 a.m.) and hosts CSU-Pueblo (2:30 p.m.), tomorrow
