SAN ANGELO, Texas – Eastern New Mexico Women's Basketball (11-4, 6-3 LSC) suffered a buzzer beater defeat on Saturday afternoon against Angelo State (12-3, 8-1 LSC), 61-59, at the Junell Center – Stephens Arena.
Jayla Smith (16 pts) led the Greyhounds for scoring, while
Julieta Ceja (13 pts) and
Tatiana Platonova (12 pts) provided a spark from the bench. ENMU dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Rambelles 51-36, with
Ishuana Hunter pulling down 11 boards.
Trinity Hudson (9 rebs) and Smith (7 rebs) both made big impacts on the glass.
Eastern started the game on a 13-0 run, holding the Rambelles to just two field goals in the first period, 20-4 ENMU. Angelo State slowly chipped away at the Greyhounds lead, tying the game at 56-56 with less than a minute to go. Free throws put ASU ahead 59-56 with 20 seconds to play, giving the Greyhounds a chance to tie the game. Ceja answered the call with a three pointer to tie the game at 59-59 with two seconds to play, but Angelo State drained a running layup as time expired to win the game. The Rambelles closed the game on a 20-6 run over the final seven minutes.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- Angelo State entered the game as the leading rebounding team in the LSC but were out-rebounded by 15 (51-36). ASU averaged 44 rebounds per game prior to the game and were held to their 4th lowest total of the season. The Greyhounds meanwhile recorded their highest rebound count in an LSC game this season, and a season high for defensive rebounds (35).
- Eastern held an edge on field goal shooting (36.8%, 21-57), connecting on 40.9% of threes (9-22), while going 8-13 at the foul line (61.5%). The Rambelles managed to shoot 34.8% from the floor (23-66), connect on four three pointers (4-12, 33.3%), and go 11-17 at the foul line (64.7%).
- Ceja tied a season best 13 points, along with their joint best for made field goals (6). Platonova reached double-figures for scoring for the 4th time this season, and Hunter secured a season best 11 rebounds. Victoria Barrera made their first start of the season, while recording five rebounds, three assists, and three steals in a season high 32 minutes (also a team high for the game).
- The Greyhounds return home for their next games, facing Sul Ross State on Thursday, January 16. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. from Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena.
