PORTALES, N.M. – Ishuana Hunter's last second jump shot lifted Eastern New Mexico Woman's Basketball (11-2, 6-1 LSC) to a 56-54 victory over Midwestern State (4-8, 2-5 LSC) on Sunday afternoon at Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena.
Hunter's last second jumper propelled them as the leading scorer for ENMU, finishing with 15 points on 7-13 shooting.
Jayla Smith put in a big double-double performance with 14 points and 14 rebounds (10 defensive rebounds).
Kaitlyn Edmondson supplied nine big rebounds for ENMU along with six points, while
Nataya Lockett and
Abbi Holder also finished with six points each in the contest.
Tatiana Platonova led ENMU with four assists to go along with four points.
Eastern stumbled during a 19-8 first quarter for MSU, but won the final three quarters for scoring. The game featured 15 lead changes and seven tied scores, but the game came down to the final two minutes will opportunities for both teams to win the game. With 26 seconds left, ENMU went 1-2 at the foul line to tie the game at 54-54. The ensuing Mustangs possession produced a deep three attempt that fell short out of bounds with 0.5 seconds to play. After advancing the ball with a timeout, Platonova tossed a perfect lob pass to Hunter, who was left unguarded on the block, to score off the window and win the game for the Greyhounds as time expired.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- Eastern won the rebounding battle 40-39 and took advantage of 16 second chance points. The Greyhounds tallied 10 assists on the night, along with seven steals, and a block.
- The Greyhounds cashed in at the foul line, hitting 15-19 attempts during the game (78.9%). Eastern struggled to connect from the field, shooting just 36.5% (19-52) and 16.7% from three (3-18).
- Smith secured their second double-double of the season, while tying a season high of 10 defensive rebounds. Platonova provided a season best four assists for the fourth time this season. Hunter has now reached double-figures for scoring in eight straight games.
- ENMU takes its first road trip of 2025 next week, traveling to Odessa, Texas to face UT Permian Basin on Thursday, January 9. Tip off from the Falcon Dome is expected for 4:15 p.m. (MST) / 5:15 p.m. (CST).
