Midwestern State takes match from Greyhounds in straight sets

Sophia Valdez led the way with 11 kills on the evening

PORTALES, N.M. - The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team (4-18, 1-10 LSC) dropped a straight-set decision to Midwestern State University on Tuesday night at Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena.

Despite the setback, junior outside hitter Sophia Valdez continued her consistent play, leading the Greyhounds with 11 kills while posting a .200 hitting percentage. Valdez also contributed defensively with four digs in the match.

Senior libero Imahni Brown anchored the Greyhounds' back-row defense, recording a team-high 12 digs against the Mustangs' offensive attack. Brown's defensive effort helped ENMU stay competitive throughout several extended rallies.

The Greyhounds showed moments of promise in the third set, putting together their strongest offensive performance of the match. Junior middle blocker Amya Speller provided a spark with five kills and a .143 hitting percentage.

ENMU now turns its attention to a challenging road trip, facing nationally-ranked Angelo State University, which is receiving votes in national polls, on Friday, Oct. 31. The Greyhounds will then travel to Odessa to take on UT Permian Basin on Saturday, Nov. 1, completing the weekend conference swing.
