Volleyball falls in five-set thriller to UT Permian Basin

Catalina Gutierrez posted a 23 assist, 19 dig double-double in the five-set loss to the Falcons

ODESSA, Texas - The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team battled through five sets but ultimately fell to UT Permian Basin 3-2 (25-21, 24-26, 26-24, 15-25, 12-15) in Lone Star Conference action Saturday afternoon at the UTPB Gym Complex Falcon Dome.

The Greyhounds (4-20, 1-12 LSC) were led by junior Sophia Valdez, who recorded a team-high 23 kills on a .185 hitting percentage. Valdez's offensive output marked one of her strongest performances of the season.

Catalina Gutierrez posted an impressive double-double with 23 assists and 19 digs, orchestrating the Greyhound offense while making significant defensive contributions throughout the five-set contest.

Addison Bartlett added seven kills, ten digs and two blocks (one solo, one assisted) to the Hounds effort, while Imahni Brown anchored the defensive effort with 15 digs.

After claiming the first set 25-21, ENMU found themselves in a back-and-forth battle. The Greyhounds narrowly dropped the second set 24-26 before bouncing back to take the third set 26-24. However, UTPB (9-14, 7-6 LSC) dominated the fourth set 15-25 and closed out the match with a 12-15 fifth-set victory.

The match featured 43 tie scores and 11 lead changes across the five sets, highlighting the competitive nature of the contest that lasted 1 hour and 42 minutes.

Amya Speller contributed six kills and five blocks for Eastern, while Violeta Flores added 18 assists and ten digs.

The Falcons were paced by Ashlee Macias, who tallied 35 kills on a .456 hitting percentage.

Eastern New Mexico will continue its road trip on Monday, November 4, traveling to Alamosa, Colorado, to face Adams State in non-conference action. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. MT.
