ENMU men's basketball wins kids day game in front of 2000+ fans

Greyhound men's basketball pulls off 19-point win over in-state foe Northern New Mexico

PORTALES, N.M. – Nearly 2,500 witnessed Eastern New Mexico men's basketball come away with a 92-73 win over Northern New Mexico on Tuesday afternoon.

"This is a day that all of our guys love," said head coach Daven Võ. "Our staff did an absolute amazing job to get the arena full. It's not easy."

The annual kids game brought youth from all around the high plains to witness Eastern New Mexico men's basketball action. The crowd did not have to look deep for entertainment as ENMU scored a season best 92 points in the win.

Austin Abrams led the program with an impressive 26 points on 11-of-17 shooting. He connected on both three point attempts he took. He only played 27 minutes in the matinee contest.

Two other Greyhounds found double digits. Jose Murillo has scored in double figures for three-straight games as he put up 19 points on 5-of-8 shooting. One area where the Chihuahua, Mexico native excelled was drawing contact. He drew 10 of the 17 fouls from Northern New Mexico. He ended up going 9-of-15 from the charity stripe. The other player in double figures was Treyvon Byrd with 10 points with a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

All eligible players appeared in the game for Eastern New Mexico. The highest scorer off the bench was Elijah Hollins who scored seven points in less than six minutes of action. Hollins was one of the best three-point shooters at the junior college level a year ago and sunk his only attempt of the afternoon.

Eastern New Mexico has the size advantage in almost all phases of the contest. The Eagles had one player standing at 6-10 and another at 6-6. All other players listed 6-4 or shorter for the program from Espanola, N.M. Due to the height edge, ENMU outscored the Eagles 58-14 in the paint.

The game was close for the entire first half with Eastern holding a mere 42-40 advantage over the upset-minded Eagles. However, the second half conversations must have gone well for ENMU as head coach Daven Võ's squad began the second half on a 14-0 run. The Greyhounds would hold the lead for nearly 33 minutes over the day.

Eastern had its best shooting day of the season by going 35-of-65 (53.8%) from the floor.

Another key part of the game was that ENMU was able to play to their style. They played quick enough to outscore the visitor's 18-11 in fast break opportunities.

Sophomore Mo Austin helped elevate the Hounds performance in the second half. He led the team with six assists and five steals while adding eight total points. Rebounding was an effective part of ENMU's game as they won that battle, 42-31.

One cool part of the game was the opportunity to see several Hounds appear for the first time in 2025-26. Some of those included Jesus Licon (five minutes), Jaden Clarke (two points), Elijah Hollins (seven points), Modibo Sanogo (three points), and Kayle Covington (two points, two rebounds).

Võ complimented all of those players, including a freshman who got to play in his first career game. "It was really cool to see Kayle," said Võ. "He was physical. I like what he did."

For those interested, the Greyhounds did put "67" on the board in the game. Eastern had the crowd erupt after the spirited shot.

Eastern New Mexico will hit the road for the first time this season with a game against Northwestern Oklahoma State at 12 p.m. MT on Saturday.
