Women's Basketball Picks Up Road Win Over Western New Mexico, 63-47

ENMU led for over 35 minutes of the game, outscoring WNMU 18-4 in the opening quarter

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Women's Basketball (16-8, 11-7 LSC) surged into an early lead in the first quarter and never looked back during a 63-47 road win over Western New Mexico (3-19, 3-15 LSC) on Thursday evening at Drag's Court.

Ishuana Hunter supplied a team best 15 points coming off the bench, while Abbi Holder contributed 13 points (also off the bench). Hunter did their damage on the inside with six-made field goals, while Holder connected on three three-pointers in the game.

Rebounding was a collective effort for the Greyhounds, with five Greyhounds having a team high four rebounds. Julieta Ceja finished with 10 points and four rebounds, while Holder led the offense with three assists.

Western New Mexico scored the opening basket of the game, but the Greyhounds dominated the first quarter, 18-4. After the opening basket from WNMU, Eastern rattled off a 18-1 streak over the next nine minutes. Both teams were even in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, with Western bringing the gap to as low as eight. However, Eastern controlled the remainder of the game, extending their lead to as many as 19 points (63-44, with 3 minutes left in the 4th quarter).

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • The Greyhounds defense made things difficult for the Mustangs, causing 17 turnovers with nine steals. Eastern came up with 12 assists during the game, while the ENMU bench outscored the Mustangs bench, 37-22.
  • Eastern finished shooting 40.4% from the field (23-57), connecting on seven threes (7-20), and hitting 10 of 14 attempts at the foul line (71.4%). Meanwhile, the home Mustangs finished 21-49 on shots during the game (42.9%), going 1-7 from behind the arc (14.3%), and 4-9 from the charity stripe (44.4%).
  • Holder crossed double figures for scoring for the 8th time this season, while providing over three assists in a game for the 9th time this season. Hunter eclipsed 10 points or more in a game for the 11th time this campaign.
  • The Greyhounds now travel to face Sul Ross State on Saturday, February 15. The road conference tilt is set to begin at 12 p.m. (MST) / 1 p.m. (CST).
