ALPINE, Texas – Eastern New Mexico Women's Basketball (17-8, 12-7 LSC) secured their fourth straight victory after beating Sul Ross State (2-20, 1-18 LSC), 91-70, on Saturday afternoon at Pete E. Gallego Center.
Jaz Salon highlighted the afternoon on offense, scoring a game high 20 points in 24 minutes off the bench. Salon finished 9-13 from the floor, including 2-4 from deep. The sophomore also led Eastern with three assists, while securing five rebounds.
Julieta Ceja (13 pts) and
Victoria Barrera (10 pts) both chipped in offensively, while 10 Greyhounds in total scored in the game.
Kaitlyn Edmondson had a good performance with nine points and a team high of six rebounds in 14 minutes.
Tatiana Platonova contributed in all areas, with eight points, five rebounds, and three assists.
After a close opening quarter, 17-15 ENMU, the Greyhounds dominated the second and third quarters, outscoring the Lobos 55-33 over that time. Eastern began to separate themselves in the 2
nd quarter, going on a 20-6 streak over the final eight minutes of the second quarter, taking a 43-29 advantage into the locker room. In the third quarter, Eastern slowly increased its advantage, using small spurts of scoring to get out to a 26-point lead, 72-46, near the end of the 3
rd period.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- Eastern New Mexico controlled the paint, outscoring the Lobos 60-32 in the paint, while winning the rebounding battle, 36-28. The Greyhounds bench made their mark with 43 points, while securing 21 points from turnovers.
- The Greyhounds were efficient from the floor, shooting 53.6% overall on 37-69 shooting, including close to 60.0% on two-point shots. Behind the arc, Eastern finished 5-15 (33.3%), while going 12-21 at the free throw line (57.1%). Â The home Lobos managed a 35.9 field percentage (23-64), while finishing 4-12 from three (33.3), and hitting 20 of 24 free throws (83.3%).
- Salon tallied a season's best 20 points in the game, with a career high nine made field goals. The team's 91 points in the game is tied for the 3rd most in the season, while the team's 37 made field goals is the highest this season against an NCAA team.
- Eastern plays their final home games of the season next weekend, facing St. Edward's on Thursday, February 20. First tip between the two squads is set for 5 p.m.
