WT Takes Series Finale Over Baseball, 15-2 (7 Inn.)

West Texas A&M completed the series sweep over ENMU

CANYON, Texas – Eastern New Mexico Baseball (5-8, 5-8 LSC) fell in the series finale against West Texas A&M (7-3, 4-3 LSC), 15-2 (7 Inn.), on Sunday afternoon at Wilder Park. The Buffs complete the series sweep over the Greyhounds.

The Eastern New Mexico bats were held to just one hit, a 2-RBI double from Beau Preston in the 4th inning. The Greyhounds managed five walks in the game, while Willie Ponce reached on a hit by pitch and a walk. Ponce and Jalen Freeman scored for ENMU. Three different Greyhounds took the mound: Julian Lopez (2.1 IP), Jose Carranza (0.2 IP), and Demitrius DiMatteo (3.0 IP).

The Buffs wasted no time to get on the scoreboard, plating two runs in the second inning, then using a seven run third inning to establish a 9-0 lead. West Texas A&M brought in the seven runs on six hits, while taking advantage of three errors. Eastern did get on the scoreboard in the following half inning. Ponce and Freeman walked to begin the inning, setting up a two-out double from Preston down the right field line to break up the no-hit bid and shutout. However, two runs in the fifth and three more runs in the sixth ended the contest in seven innings, 15-2 WT.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • Preston supplied the lone hit for the Greyhounds (double), recording a pair of RBIs. WT scattered 16 hits during the game, including seven going for extra bases.
  • Lopez is given the loss for the Greyhounds, allowing five runs over 2.1 innings pitched. Max Lankford gets the win in relief for the Buffs, throwing three perfect innings with five strikeouts.
  • Eastern New Mexico steps out of conference play for its next series, facing in-state rival New Mexico Highlands on Friday, February 21, for a single nine-inning game, beginning at 1 p.m. in Las Vegas, N.M.
