Women's Basketball Eclipse 20 Wins Following Victory Over West Texas A&M, 56-43

Eastern swept WT in the season series for the first time in program history

CANYON, Texas – Eastern New Mexico Woman's Basketball (20-8, 15-7 LSC) earned a hard-fought road victory over West Texas A&M (18-11, 12-10 LSC) during a 56-43 win on Thursday evening at First Bank United Center.

The Greyhounds had even scoring, with five different players recording seven or more points during the game. Abbi Holder and Ishuana Hunter both contributed 10 points in the win, with four field goals each. Jayla Smith and Victoria Barrera each finished with nine points during the game.

Julieta Ceja grabbed a team best seven rebounds in the game, while Barrera and Kaitlyn Edmondson each pulled down five boards. Trinity Hudson controlled the paint with two blocks, four rebounds, and six points, while Holder and Hunter had four and three assists, respectively.

Both teams were back and forth in the low scoring game, as the Eastern pulled away to its first substantial lead in the closing stages of the second quarter. Seven straight points for the Greyhounds opened an 11-point lead over WT, as the Lady Buffs cut the score to 27-20 at halftime. After an even third quarter, Eastern pulled even further away with a 14-4 stretch (including eight straight points) over a six minute stretch in the 4th period. ENMU led by as many as 16 points at the end of the game, holding WT to 3-15 shooting in the final period.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • Both teams finished with 37 rebounds in the game, while the ENMU bench outscored WT 21-3. The Greyhounds also won the turnover battle, 12-15, while outscoring the Buffs in the paint, 34-26.
  • Eastern finished shooting 40.4% from the floor (21-52), connecting on 3-14 from the three-point line (21.4%), and going 11-20 at the foul line (55.0%). Meanwhile, the Lady Buffs were held to a 31.5 field goal percentage (17-54), finding just one three in the game (1-14, 7.1%), while going 8-13 at the foul line (61.5%).
  • The Greyhound defense held West Texas A&M to their lowest point total of the season (43), along with a season low 17 field goals and one three pointer.
  • Eastern beat the Lady Buffs in Canyon for the first time since 2018, while earning a season sweep over WT for the first time in program history.
  • The Greyhounds reach the 20-win mark for just the 5th time in program history, doing so in regular season for just the 4th time ever.
  • Eastern were placed 4th in the LSC prior to the game but now know their opponent for the opening round of the LSC tournament. The Greyhounds will face Angelo State on Thursday, March 6, with tip scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (MST) / 8:30 p.m. (CST) from Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas. The full LSC bracket is set to be released on Saturday afternoon, confirming the first-round pairing.
