PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Woman's Basketball (14-8, 9-7 LSC) grinded out a big home win against Angelo State (16-6, 12-4 LSC), beating the Rambelles, 71-67, on Thursday evening at Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena.
Nataya Lockett took over as the Hounds leading scorer, finishing with a game high 21 points on 10-16 shooting.
Julieta Ceja also played a key role, playing a game high 38 minutes with 12 points, and a team best in rebounds (8) and assists (4).
Kaitlyn Edmondson and
Jaz Salon made big contributions from the bench, with Edmondson scoring 11 points with five rebounds. Salon canned a pair of triples to finish with eight points, while
Trinity Hudson pulled down seven rebounds in the game.
Eastern led for over 33 minutes during the game, but the Rambelles never went away during the back-and-forth contest. The Greyhounds made their first big run at the end of the 2
nd quarter, going on a 16-4 streak to end the period to take a 36-31 lead at half. Eastern dominated the opening stages of the 3
rd quarter, logging a 19-4 run to get ahead by 20 points (55-35). From then on, Angelo State slowly chipped away bringing it to a one possession game with six minutes to play. Eastern led by just a point with one minute to play but held ASU for the remainder of the game while hitting three free throws to seal the contest.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- Eastern New Mexico bench supplied 28 points, while scoring 32 points in the paint. Angelo State found 26 points in the paint, and capitalized on turnovers, scoring 28 points from turnovers.
- The Greyhounds finished shooting 47.5% from the floor, while connecting on 6-17 three-pointers (35.3%), and going 9-14 at the foul line (64.3%). ASU finished shooting 34.7% from the floor (25-72), while hitting six three pointers (6-14, 42.9%), and going 11-14 at the charity stripe.
- Lockett surpassed 20 or more points in a game for the 5th time this season, while Ceja's 12 points marks the 8th time this season they have surpassed double figures for points.
- The Greyhounds play their next game at home, facing UT Permian Basin on Saturday, February 8 at Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena. First tip between the two teams is scheduled for 1 p.m.
