PORTALES, N.M. – After dropping the series opener, Eastern New Mexico Baseball (5-2, 5-2 LSC) pitched a pair of shutout victories over St. Edward's (4-3, 4-3 LSC) on Saturday afternoon at Greyhound Baseball Field. In the first game, Eastern took a 5-0 victory, while the Greyhounds blanked the Hilltoppers again in a 7-0 win.
GAME ONE: ENMU 5, SEU 0
Nick Mooney took the headlines in the first shutout of the season for the ENMU pitching staff. The left-hander struck out five batters, recording just three hits with four walks. Mooney went through a spot-less outing in 112 pitches, forcing eight groundouts and eight flyouts.
Both teams had only two extra base hits in the game, two home runs for Eastern New Mexico. The Greyhounds compiled seven hits, coming from five different batters.
Anthony Cortese supplied a pair of hits, scoring twice, with a solo home run.
Willie Ponce hit a three-run bomb during the game, leading the team with three RBIs.
Eastern opened the scoring in the second inning with a bases loaded walk from
Luciano Terilli, then scored another with a Cortese solo blast in the third inning. After a clean 4
th and 5
th inning, the Greyhounds struck with three more runs in the 6
th frame. Terilli walked and Cortese later singled to reach base, then Ponce teed off on a 2-1 pitch to right field, giving ENMU the 5-0 advantage.
GAME TWO: ENMU 7, SEU 0
Eastern New Mexico scored all seven runs over the first five innings, using a big four run inning to secure the game offensively.
Adrien Martin and Terilli both had two hits and two RBIs in the game.
Demetrio Archuleta led the team with two runs scored, reaching on a double and a walk.
On the rubber,
Cole Lancaster struck out six hitters over six innings, giving up just three hits and a walk. Lancaster provided three 1-2-3 innings, while
Jose Carranza recorded the final three outs to seal the second shutout of the day.
Terilli and
Jalen Freeman started the game with singles, then later in the frame Ponce brought Freeman home with a bunt single. Eastern opened the game with four runs in the 4
th inning, with Archuleta beginning the hitting with a double. The next four Greyhounds reached base, with Martin (RBI single),
Kyle Kiernan (RBI single), and Terilli (2RBI single) bringing home the runs. The following inning, back-to-back singles from Martin and
Beau Preston scored ENMU's 6
th and 7
th run.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Mooney lowers his ERA to 0.77 after his first two starts of the season, throwing the first complete game shutout for the Greyhounds since 2022 (Noah De La Riva, 3/18/22, 10-0 (8 Inn.).
- Cortese and Ponce both hit their second home runs of the season, with Cortese recording a home run in back-to-back games.
- Both Lancaster and Mooney move to 2-0 on the season. Lancaster and Carranza pitched a combined shutout, the first combined shutout since a 7-0 win against St. Mary's in 2024 (Gavin Perry and Zach Raichel).
- Both wins over the Hilltoppers marked the first and second shutout wins in series history for ENMU.
- The Greyhounds wrap up the series on Sunday, February 9, facing the Hilltoppers at 1 p.m. at Greyhound Baseball Field.
