PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Baseball (5-3, 5-3 LSC) fell behind early against St. Edward's (5-3, 5-3 LSC), as the Hilltoppers held off the Greyhounds, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon at Greyhound Baseball Field. Both teams take a 2-2 series split, with the Greyhounds winning games two and three.
Willie Ponce led the Greyhounds hitting effort, supplying three singles during the game.
Luciano Terilli had the only extra base hit for the Greyhounds (double), while five other Greyhounds picked up a single in the game.
Jalen Freeman and
Tucker Gideon both supplied RBIs in the game.
Julian Lopez got the start on the mound, throwing four innings, allowing five hits with three earned runs and three strikeouts.
Klevert Martina worked through an inning and a third, allowing a pair of runs, while
Marc Rios worked 0.2 innings.
Adrian Rubio finished the game on the rubber, facing 10 batters over 3.0 innings allowing only one walk and no hits.
After a blank first two innings, St. Edward's opened the scoring with back-to-back two-out hits (single and a double) in the 3rd inning. The following inning, the Hilltoppers struck again with two runs in the 4
th inning. The Greyhounds responded with their first run in the bottom of the inning, as an infield single from Ponce got the first hit of the day. After Ponce stole second, Gideon singled through the right side to score the Greyhounds first run. In the sixth frame, both teams put up a pair of runs, with a RBI single from Freeman and a bases loaded groundout scoring the runs for ENMU, 5-3 SEU. Eastern got runners on in the final three frames, but the Hilltoppers held on to secure the 5-3 win.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- Eastern out hit the Hiltoppers 9-7 during the game, while SEU supplied a pair of extra bases hits. Both teams stole two bases.
- Lopez is charged with the loss on the mound, while Carson Blakeley earned the win in 5.0 innings for the Hilltoppers. Parker Tennill earned his third save of the season, and second of the weekend, after tossing 3.1 scoreless relief innings.
- The Greyhounds and Hilltoppers split the season series for the second consecutive season.
- Eastern New Mexico heads to West Texas A&M for its next LSC series, playing the Buffs four-times in Canyon next weekend. The series starts on Friday, February 14, with the series opener scheduled to start at 1 p.m. (MST) / 2 p.m. (CST).
