Softball Run Rules MSU-Moorhead, 15-7 (5 Inn.); Secures Comeback Win Over Lincoln (Mo.), 6-3 (9 Inn.)

The Greyhounds faced MSU-Moorhead for the first time in program history, while beating Lincoln (Mo.) for the second time this weekend

CANYON, Texas – In two different types of games, Eastern New Mexico Softball (7-2) picked up a pair of victories over Minnesota State – Moorhead (4-5), 15-7 (5 Inn.) and Lincoln (Mo.) (0-4), 6-3 (9 Inn.) on Saturday at Schaeffer Park.

GAME ONE: ENMU 15, MSU-M 8

Eastern scored 15 runs in just four innings, recording 15 hits in that time. The Greyhounds scored three runs in the first inning, with Aylene Lucero starting the inning with a triple. Valeria Contreras walked, then Alondra Vasquez singled, as all three runners scored on a throwing error. Eastern scored five runs in the second inning on five hits, then added four more runs in the 3rd. The Dragons did put up five runs in the top of the 4th (12-7 ENMU), but Eastern replied with three runs in the bottom of the inning to establish an eight-run lead, 15-7.

NOTABLE STATS

  • Eight different hitters recorded a base hit, while five different batters had multiple hits. The Greyhounds recorded a pair of doubles (Christina Meneses and Vasquez) and a pair of triples (Madison Begaye and Lucero).
  • Eastern supplied 11 RBIs, coming from six different Greyhounds. Contreras, Lucero, Grace Rofii, and Vasquez all had a pair of RBIs.
  • Jordan Rivera got the start in the circle, earning the win in 3.2 innings pitched. Cierra Smith entered in relief, throwing 1.1 innings with two strikeouts and two hits allowed.
  • The Greyhounds and Dragons faced each other for the first time in program history.

GAME TWO: ENMU 6, LIN 3

Lincoln (Mo.) grabbed a pair of runs in the opening inning to take a 2-0 lead. A leadoff double got a runner on base, then a fielder's choice and three walks brought home the opening two runs. Eastern were held hitless over the opening three innings, but a Vasquez double broke up the no-hit bid in the 4th. The Blue Tigers extended their lead to 3-0 with a run in the 5th inning from an infield ground out.

However, the Greyhounds scored a pair of runs in the 6th inning to get on the scoreboard. Meneses started the frame with a single, then Vasquez singled and Rofii provided a sacrifice bunt to push the runners into scoring position. Marissa Rodriguez supplied an RBI single, then Alexa Ayala (pinch hitting) knocked in a run on double. Eastern did push the game to extras with Lucero coming home on a wild pitch in the 7th inning. ENMU broke the tie in the 9th inning, as Rofii scored the go ahead run on a sacrifice fly. An error on the same play scored another Greyhound run, then Rodriguez doubled to bring home the third run of the inning, 6-3. Rodriguez pitched a scoreless 9th inning to seal the victory for Eastern

NOTABLE STATS

  • Eastern out hit the Blue Tigers, 11-5, rallying from three runs down to win the game.
  • Rodriguez and Vasquez both finished with two hits, with the former providing a pair of RBIs. Lucero scored twice for Eastern, while Rofii finished 1-3 with a pair of sacrifices (one sacrifice fly).
  • Miranda Guillen tossed four innings in the circle as the starting pitcher, getting the no decision after allowing three runs from two hits and six walks, with five strikeouts. Rodriguez earned the win in five shutout innings, allowing three hits with one strikeout.
  • The Greyhounds played their second extra inning game of the season, winning their first game of the season in extra frames.
Eastern play their final game of the weekend on Sunday, February 9, facing Minnesota State – Moorhead, with first pitch from Schaeffer Park set for 8 a.m. (MST) / 9 a.m. (CST).
