PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Baseball (14-11, 12-11 LSC) took down #4 UT Tyler (20-8, 20-7) not once, but twice during a doubleheader sweep on Sunday afternoon at Greyhound Baseball Field. In the opening game, three crucial late runs propelled ENMU to a 5-4 victory, while ENMU blew open the game early during a 13-3 win in game two.
GAME ONE: ENMU 5, #4 UTT 4
The Greyhounds used timely hitting to get the better of the Patriots, out hitting UTT 8-6, while only leaving three runners on base compared to the 10 of UT Tyler. Both
Anthony Cortese and
Adrien Martin finished with a pair of hits, while
Dylan Shea picked up a team high two RBIs.
Cole Lancaster got the start on the hill for Eastern, going three innings with three runs allowed.
Adrian Rubio got the victory for ENMU in four innings of relief. Rubio struck out four batters, allowing just a pair of hits and one run on the hill.
Kyle Kiernan gave ENMU the spark in the first inning, hitting a leadoff home run to give ENMU an early lead. Later in the inning, Shea had a sacrifice fly to score another run for the Greyhounds. The lead was short lived, as a three-run home run pushed the Patriots in front in the second inning.
However, the Greyhounds offense clicked in the 3
rd inning, scoring three runs to go in front 5-3. A pair of walks and a single loaded the bases with one out, with a wild pitch tying the game for ENMU. Martin gave Eastern the lead back with a single through the right side, then Shea followed with an RBI single through the left side. From then on, the Greyhounds defense and pitching were able to make plays to avoid a UTT comeback. The Patriots stranded six runners over the 4
th and 5
th inning, picking up one run in the 5
th. Rubio shut the door on the Patriots, with just one batter reaching on an error over the final two innings.
GAME TWO: ENMU 13, #4 UTT 3
Eastern took advantage of the free bases on offense, scoring 13 runs on 10 hits and nine walks during the game.
Demetrio Archuleta set the tone with three hits, scoring three times.
Luciano Terilli finished 2-4 in the game, scoring three times, with a triple, while
Willie Ponce and Martin both had two RBIs.
Behind 13 runs of support,
Josaiah Estrella tossed a complete game on the mound, allowing just three runs in the final inning (one earned). The righty worked around eight hits with just one walk, and eight strikeouts.
The Greyhounds wasted no time to get on the scoreboard, with Kiernan and Archuleta singling, and a stolen base getting runners in scoring position. Kiernan advanced home on a wild pitch, while Archuleta scored on a triple from Terilli. Later in the inning, Cortese produced a run with a ground out as ENMU led 3-0 after the first.
Eastern put up 10 runs in the third inning to take the game out of reach from the Patriots. After three straight hits loaded the bases, Cortese grabbed an RBI with a walk. Shea reached base on a dropped double play, which extended the inning for ENMU.
Jalen Freeman came in clutch with a 3-RBI double, then RBI singles from Archuleta, Ponce, and Martin quickly made the score 13-0 at the end of the 3
rd inning. Defensively, the Greyhounds allowed just one hit over the next few innings, with the Patriots picking up three consolation runs in the 7
th inning.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Kiernan hit his second home run of the season, while Rubio earned their second win of the season. Estrella tossed their first complete game of the season, and just the third complete game of the season.
- Eastern wrap up the weekend series tomorrow (March 17), facing the Patriots in a Monday nine-inning game beginning at 12 p.m.
