PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Baseball (19-12, 17-12 LSC) held off Oklahoma Christian's (7-23, 6-23 LSC) late attempt to win the game with solid defense over the final three innings in a 7-6 victory at Greyhound Baseball Field on Friday evening.
The Eagles out hit the Greyhounds, 13-12, in the game, but ENMU supplied three extra bases hits in the game to OC's one. Four Greyhounds accounted for multiple hits, with
Luciano Terilli going 3-4 with a triple, while both of
Kyle Kiernan's hits went for three bases.
Demetrio Archuleta,
Anthony Cortese, and
Dylan Shea each finished with two RBIs, with six different Hounds scoring a run.
Demitrius DiMatteo earned the start on the hill, giving up six hits and four runs in a no-decision.
Adrian Rubio gets the win, going 2.1 innings with two runs allowed and a strike out. Terilli earns the save entering the game from center field, recording the final six outs and registering two K's.
After four empty frames to begin the game, all 13 runs between the two teams were scored in the 5
th and 6
th innings. Oklahoma Christian struck first with four runs in the 5
th, only for ENMU to take the lead with six runs in the bottom of the inning.
Daniel Pruitt singled to start the frame, then came around to score on a triple from
Kyle Kiernan.
Demetrio Archuleta singled home Kiernan, then
Anthony Cortese tied the game with an RBI single to right center. A walk loaded the bases, as
Dylan Shea came through with two outs to give ENMU the lead with a 2-RBI single up the middle.
The lead was short lived as the Eagles tied the game with two runs in the 6
th, but ENMU retook the lead in the bottom of the inning with an RBI groundout. The Greyhounds defense held the one run lead, making key plays in each of the final three innings. In the 7
th, ENMU got out of a jam with runners in scoring position as a line out double play ended the inning. In the 8
th, with runners on first and second, ENMU turned a 4-6-3 double play to get out of the inning unscathed. In the final frame, Kiernan threw out the tying run at the plate from left field, then Terilli struck out the final hitter to confirm the win in a two inning save.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- The Greyhounds extended their winning streak to five games, the longest winning streak this season.
- With a hit by pitch in the 5th inning, Willie Ponce became the program leader in HBP, with his 47th career hit by pitch as a Greyhound. He surpassed Dan Bramley's all-time record from 1995.
- Terilli made their first appearance on the mound this season, earning a save. Rubio has earned the win in his last three appearances.
- Eastern set a season high for triples in a single game with three, while Kiernan's two triples are a personal best.
- Eastern New Mexico returns to Greyhound Baseball Field tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, March 29, to face the Eagles in a doubleheader, beginning at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.
