Baseball Homers Past OC In Game 1, 11-6; Wins On Walk-Off In Game 2, 4-3

The Greyhounds secured a series victory over the Eagles with a sweep of the doubleheader

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Baseball (21-12, 19-12 LSC) used the long ball and late game heroics to take both games of a doubleheader against Oklahoma Christian (7-25, 6-25 LSC) on Saturday afternoon at Greyhound Baseball Field. ENMU hit three homeruns in an 11-6 game one victory, while scoring three runs in the bottom of the 7th to earn a walk-off victory over the Eagles, 4-3.

GAME ONE: ENMU 11, OC 6

Eastern New Mexico outhit the Eagles, 10-7, recording six extra-base hits in the game (three doubles, three home runs). Four Greyhounds finished with two hits each, with Kyle Kiernan scoring three times, going 2-2, with two walks. Demetrio Archuleta, Luciano Terilli, and Anthony Cortese each hit a home run during the game, as Cortese's three-run blast gave him a team high 3-RBIs.

On the mound, Julian Lopez allowed just one hit over 2.2 relief innings to get the victory for ENMU. Cole Lancaster started the game, going 4.1 innings with six runs (five earned) on three walks and three strikeouts.

Oklahoma Christian wasted no time to get on the scoreboard, scoring a run in the opening inning. Eastern took the lead in the third frame, using the long ball. With two out, Kiernan drew a walk to get the tying run on base, then Archuleta crushed a homer to deep left center to give ENMU a 2-1 advantage. Terilli stepped in as the next batter and homered to the opposite field to give ENMU a 3-1 cushion.

A big 5th inning for both teams swung the lead back and forth. Oklahoma Christian scored five runs from four hits in the 5th frame, but ENMU took the lead back with four runs, 7-6. Jalen Freeman started the inning with a double, then scored after a wild throw went out of play to send Freeman to the plate. Kiernan followed with a single, then Willie Ponce walked with two outs. Cortese then took the first pitch he saw over the fence in left field to restore the ENMU lead. ENMU picked up four insurance runs in the 6th, with Eastern the four runs coming about on four hits, 11-6.

GAME TWO: ENMU 4, OC 3

Despite being outhit 9-6, the Greyhounds pushed across four runs taking advantage of six walks and a hit-by-pitch. Kiernan had a solo home run, drawing three walks, and scoring the game-winning run in the 7th. Dylan Shea collected a pair of hits in the game, while Archuleta posted two RBIs on a single.

Josaiah Estrella recorded 20 of the 21 outs defensively, pitching 6.2 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. Logan Kinter threw just two pitches, recording one out to earn the win.

Three hits to open the game for Oklahoma Christian scored the game first run, with the Eagles combining three singles to take a 1-0 lead. OC worked out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the inning, turning a 5-3 double play, as the Greyhounds stranded a bases loaded situation. Kiernan tied the game with one swing in the 3rd inning, hitting a towering home run to left field.

Oklahoma Christian singled in a pair of runs in the 5th and 7th inning, taking a 3-1 lead with ENMU down to their final three outs. Shea started the comeback effort with a bloop single to center field, then Daniel Pruitt drew a walk on a nine pitch at bat to represent the tying run. After Dominick Cassell and Riley Hall came in as pinch runners, Kiernan drew a full count walk to load the bases. Archuleta turned on the first pitch he saw, tying the game with a hard single back up the middle.

After a pitching change, a wild pitch moved the winning run to just 90 feet away, then Archuleta swiped second to eliminate a double-play chance. Terilli was sent to first on an intentional walk, then Willie Ponce provided the walk-off moment with a single threw the right side, securing the 4-3 win for the Greyhounds.
