ODESSA, TEXAS – Eastern New Mexico Baseball (12-8, 10-8 LSC) secured a sweep of a road doubleheader against UT Permian Basin (3-19, 3-19 LSC) on Friday afternoon at Roden Field. ENMU captured the opening game 7-5, scoring a run in the 6
th and 7
th inning, while the Greyhounds scored four late runs in the second game during a 11-6 victory.
GAME ONE: ENMU 7, UTPB 5
Despite registering four hits as a team, Eastern New Mexico pushed across seven runs, taking advantage of 10 walks and a hit by pitch. Four different Greyhounds recorded a hit, combining one single, one double, one triple, and one homerun.
Jalen Freeman led the team with three RBIs, while
Daniel Pruitt picked up two RBIs in the game.
Josaiah Estrella led the Greyhounds on the mound, going five innings as a starter with eight hits allowed and five runs.
Adrian Rubio secured the final four outs in a save effort, allowing just two hits and two walks, with a strikeout.
The Greyhounds started early scoring three runs in the opening inning.
Luciano Terilli led off with a walk, while
Anthony Cortese reached on a hit by pitch, and
Adrien Martin walked with two outs. Freeman delivered a bases clearing triple to get ENMU on the board, 3-0. UT Permian Basin clawed back with three runs over the next two innings to tie the game at 3-3. Each team scored two runs in the 4
th to push the game to 5-5, as Pruitt hit a two-run home run to give ENMU the edge.
Eastern retook the lead with a run in the 6
th inning, then added a second run in the 7
th frame. ENMU grabbed the run in the sixth via a walk, followed by a
Tucker Gideon double. In seventh,
Riley Hall ran home on an error after a failed pickoff attempt to give ENMU a 7-5 lead. UTPB did have the tying run on base in the 7
th, but the Greyhounds secured the win with the three groundouts to end the inning.
GAME TWO: ENMU 11, UTPB 6
The Greyhounds offense matched UTPB for hits with eight, but Eastern tallied 13 walks and a pair of hit by pitches to get runners on base.
Demetrio Archuleta led the Greyhounds with two hits (triple and home run), along with three RBIs. Freeman scored three times, as Terilli,
Kyle Kiernan, and Martin all drew three walks.
Nick Mooney started the game on the mound, working around one bad inning during a 4.0 inning outing. Mooney earned the win, allowing six hits and five runs (one earned run) with three walks and a pair of strikeouts.
Demitrius DiMatteo picked up a save, ending the game with three solid innings of relief. The reliver allowed just two hits and one run, facing 11 batters to record nine outs.
Both teams scored five runs in the opening two innings. ENMU picked up a run in the first with a sacrifice fly from Cortese, then added four runs in the second frame. Archuleta had an RBI triple;
Willie Ponce supplied a 2-RBI double and Cortese had another sacrifice fly. UTPB scored five runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game.
The Greyhounds took the lead in the 5
th inning, with Freeman providing an RBI double, while Pruitt recorded an RBI single. UTPB made it a one run game going into the 7
th, but Eastern put up four runs to build a solid lead. Archuleta powered a two-run home run to start the scoring, then a pair of Greyhounds drew a bases loaded walk.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- ENMU's 13 walks in the second game of the day were the most by ENMU this season, while three different Greyhounds recording a single-game high of three walks.
- Pruitt recorded their team leading 4th home run of the season, while Archuleta registered his first long ball of the season.
- Eastern continues the series on Saturday, March 8, playing the Falcons in a nine-inning game beginning at 12 p.m. (MST).
