Baseball Falls To UT Permian Basin, 14-4 (7 Inn.)

UTPB scored nine runs in the 5th inning to establish a big lead, winning the game vis run-rule

ODESSA, Texas – Eastern New Mexico Baseball (12-9, 10-9 LSC) dropped a seven inning contest with UT Permian Basin (4-19, 4-19 LSC) on Saturday afternoon at Roden Field.

The Greyhound bats scattered seven hits in the game, including five doubles, and drew one walk. Willie Ponce finished with two hits and two RBIs, while Luciano Terilli grabbed a pair of hits with an RBI. Four different Greyhounds took the mound: Cole Lancaster (3.2 IP), Jose Carranza (0.2 IP), Reno Morehouse (0.1 IP), and Chase Rozell (2.0 IP).

The Falcons slowly took a 4-0 lead after the first four innings, scoring a pair of runs in the 1st and 3rd innings. ENMU hit back with a run in the 5th frame, as an infield error allowed the Greyhounds to score. However, UT Permian Basin supplied nine runs in the bottom of the 5th, blowing the game open (13-1). UTPB scored nine runs on seven hits with four walks, supplying four singles and three doubles in the frame. Eastern scored three runs in the 7th to continue the game, as Terilli and Ponce had back-to-back doubles to plate three runs. However, one run in the bottom of the inning from the Falcons ended the game via mercy rule.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • Terilli picked up his seventh multi-hit game of the season, while Ponce supplied his team leading eighth multi-hit game of the season.
  • Lancaster is given the defeat (3-2), allowing four runs in his 3.2 innings pitched, while Nolan LaChappa (1-2) threw a complete game on the hill for the Falcons, striking out four over seven innings.
  • Eastern New Mexico wraps up the road series tomorrow afternoon against the Falcons, on Sunday, March 9, with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. (MST).
