TYLER, Texas – Eastern New Mexico Softball (14-10, 7-7 LSC) dropped a pair of games during a tough road doubleheader against #1 UT Tyler (21-2, 12-2 LSC) on Friday afternoon at Irwin Field. ENMU fell in the first contest, 5-0, while the Patriots scored often in a 12-0 (5 Inn.) win in game two.
GAME ONE: #1 UTT 5, ENMU 0
The Patriots opened the game with three runs in the first inning, doing so on a pair of hits. A hit by pitch led off the game, then two batters later a home run gave UT Tyler the lead. An RBI double brought in another run to cap the first inning for UTT. Eastern struggled to get base runners on in the first few innings, with UT Tyler picking up a fourth run in the 3
rd inning.
UT Tyler made the score 5-0 after the 5
th inning, while Eastern broke up the no hit bid with an
Aylene Lucero single in the top of the 6
th. The Greyhounds did load the bases in the final inning with a pair of walks and a hit by pitch, but UTT got three straight out to end the game.
NOTABLE STATS
- Lucero provided the lone base hit, an infield single, while Alondra Vasquez, Marissia Rodriguez, and Miranda Guillen all drew a walk during the game.
- Ramona Fossum caught one runner stealing during the game from behind the plate, with second baseman Emily Marsh and Lucero in right field recording a team high four putouts each.
- Rodriguez started the game for ENMU in the circle, allowing five runs over four innings. Guillen tossed the final inning, striking out two of the four batters they faced.
- Primrose Aholelei tossed a complete game shutout for the Patriots, striking out 10 batters over seven innings.
GAME TWO: #1 UTT 12, ENMU 0 (5 Inn.)
A three-run home run got the Patriots going in the first inning, scoring four runs in the opening frame to take an early lead. A solo home run in the second inning pushed the score to 5-0, but ENMU put runners in scoring position to start the third.
Samyrah Sanders singled to centerfield, then Lucero singled down the left field line, with both moving up on a sacrifice bunt. However, the Patriots got out of the inning with an infield foul out and a line out.
UTT kept up the scoring with two runs in the 3
rd inning, and five runs in the 4
th inning to take a 12-0 advantage. Eastern did reach in the 5
th with a pair of walks, but the Patriots finished the game with a 12-0 victory in five innings.
NOTABLE STATS
- Lucero, Christina Meneses, and Sanders all supplied a single during the game, while Vasquez had two walks.
- Three Greyhounds entered the circle during the game, with Jordan Rivera starting the game and being given the loss. Rivera went 2.2 innings, while Guillen faced three batters and Cierra Smith went one full inning.
- Cera Blanchard started the game, recording 14 of the 15 outs, while Kaylee Davis got the final out for UTT. Blanchard struck out seven hitters, with just a pair of walks and three hits.
Eastern New Mexico look to bounce back with a two-game series against Texas Woman's on Sunday, March 8, in Denton, Texas. The Greyhounds get started at 12 p.m. (MST), while game two is set for 2 p.m. (MST).
