#1 West Texas A&M Takes Two Games Against Softball

The Greyhounds start their final home weekend on Wednesday against Angelo State.

CANYON, Texas – Eastern New Mexico Softball dropped two games on the road against #1 West Texas A&M on Sunday afternoon at Schaeffer Park. In the opening game, WT scored 11 runs over the opening two innings, winning the game 13-1 (5 Inn.). In game two, both teams were back and forth over the first five innings, but a six-run 6th inning led to a 12-4 (6 Inn.) win for WT.

GAME ONE: #1 WT 13, ENMU 1 (5 Inn.)

ENMU started the game on the right foot with Valeria Contreras and Alondra Vasquez reaching base to start the game. Marissa Rodriguez followed with a two-out ground-rule double to score Contreras. However, West Texas A&M took the lead back in the first inning with a three-run home run and a RBI double. WT piled on more runs in the 2nd, scoring seven runs to take an 11-1 lead after two innings. Opportunities were hard to come by for ENMU, finding one hit over the remaining three innings, as West Texas A&M added two more insurance runs to win the game 13-1 (5 Inn.).

NOTABLE STATS

  • Rodriguez' double in the 1st inning and a Christina Meneses single in the 3rd were the Greyhounds only hits, as WT used nine hits and eight walks to win the game.
  • Jordan Rivera gets the loss, tossing 1.1 innings with four hits and six walks allowed, yielding nine runs. Ciara Loken pitched 2.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits.
  • Emille Boyer started the game, throwing one inning for WT, while Heidi Vortherms earned the win in three scoreless frames. Kendall Selitzky finished the game with one hitless inning.

GAME TWO: #1 WT 12, ENMU 4 (6 Inn.)

The Greyhounds started the game quickly with lead-off hits from Aylene Lucero and Contreras. Later, with two outs and a full count, Rodriguez crushed a home run to center field to give the Greyhounds a 3-0 advantage. Eastern held the Lady Buffs lineup in check over the first two innings, but WT put up four runs in the bottom of the third, taking a 4-3 lead. WT scored the runs on three walks and a hit, taking advantage of a sacrifice fly and a double steal.

However, Eastern tied the game in the 5th inning with an RBI double from Meneses. Lucero reached on a hit-by-pitch, then pinch runner Samyrah Sanders entered the game. After moving up to second on a groundout, Meneses drove home Sanders with a double to left center to tie the game at 4-4. The home Buffs used a two run home run to take the lead in the bottom of the inning, then used six runs in the 6th to end the game 12-4 (6 Inn.).
