PORTALES, N.M. – Late run rallies from #7 Angelo State sunk Eastern New Mexico Softball during a doubleheader against the Rambelles on Friday afternoon at Greyhound Softball Field. In the opening game, Angelo State scored five runs in the sixth inning to take a comfortable 10-3 victory. During the second game, ENMU and ASU traded the lead back and forth, as the Rambelles scored three crucial insurance runs in the 7
th inning to win the game 12-9 over the Hounds.
GAME ONE: #7 ASU 10, ENMU 3
Angelo State took advantage of some early free passes to score two runs on the opening inning, with a pair of runs scoring on two sacrifice flies. Eastern responded with a run in the bottom of the 1
st, with
Valeria Contreras doubling to deep left center and moving to third on a wild pitch.
Christina Meneses brought home Contreras with a bloop single to right to score the Greyhounds first run. ASU pushed across a run in the third inning, but ENMU tied the ball game on a two-run home run from Meneses. Contreras worked a seven-pitch walk, then Meneses hit a towering home run to center field to tie the score at 3-3.
However, Angelo State manufactured a handful of runs over the next few innings, taking the lead on a hang up play to steal home in the 4
th inning and take a 4-3 lead. In the 5th inning, the Rambelles brought home a run after a single sent a runner home to the plate, being safe on an obstruction call. In the 6th inning, the Rambelles put up five runs, producing five hits with an inside the park home run and a pair of doubles doing the damage.
NOTABLE STATS
- Angelo State outhit the Greyhounds 10-4 during the game, while Meneses and Contreras both had extra base hits.
- Cierra Smith started the game for the Greyhounds, facing five batters with two runs allowed. Jordan Rivera came in relief, tossing 5.1 innings with eight hits and seven runs allowed. Marissa Rodriguez supplied 1.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits.
- Cheyenne Floyd earned the victory in the circle for the Rambelles, tossing six innings with three runs allowed with nine strikeouts. Matie Wolkow pitched the final inning for ASU, allowing one hit facing three batters.
GAME TWO: #7 ASU 12, ENMU 9
After a 1-2-3 inning to start the game for ENMU, the Greyhounds tagged four runs in the first inning, with
Meilana Lopez hitting a two-out grand slam. A single, fielder's choice, and a intentional walk loaded the bases with one out, but ASU was able to make a play at home to get the lead runner. However, Lopez took the first pitch they saw over the fence in left center, giving ENMU a 4-0 lead.
After an empty second and third inning, ASU flipped the score scoring eight runs in the top of the 4
th, taking an 8-4 lead. ENMU responded quickly with four runs in the bottom of the frame, tying the score at 8-8. A single and fielder's choice put runners on the corners with one out, as
Emily Marsh sliced a double down the right field line to plate a run.
Aylene Lucero singled to left center to bring in a run, then Contreras followed with an RBI infield single. Later,
Alondra Vasquez beat out a bases loaded fielder's choice, forcing the tying run home to tie the contest.
Following an empty 5
th inning, ASU put two runners in scoring position with no outs, but Eastern produced two non-productive outs to keep the runners from scoring. However, an infield single sent the runner from third home, as Angelo State regained the lead, 9-8. The Rambelles added to their lead with three insurance runs in the 7
th, scoring on a hit-by-pitch and two passed balls. ENMU found a late consolation run in the 7
th, with
Miranda Guillen hitting a solo home run to center field, as Angelo State took the series finale, 12-9.
NOTABLE STATS
- The Greyhounds matched the Rambelles for hits with 10, as both teams finished with three extra base hits each. Four different Greyhounds finished with multiple hits in the game, while Lopez led the Greyhounds with four RBIs (career high).
- Rodriguez takes the loss in relief, allowing a pair of runs over 2.0 innings. Guillen started the game for Eastern, surrendering seven runs on five hits. Rivera pitched 0.2 innings, allowing three runs (one earned run).
- For the Rambelles, Raegan Sucher picked up the victory in relief, throwing 1.2 scoreless innings with three hits allowed. Ameila Hatthorn gave up eight earned runs during a start, while Floyd recorded the final four outs in a save effort.
Eastern play their final home games of the 2025 season on Friday, April 18, welcoming Lubbock Christian for a pair of games. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. of the opening game. ENMU will be honoring 10 seniors of the program after the completion of game two.
