Platonova makes history as Greyhounds roll past Sul Ross State, 101-58

Platonova and Ceja both recorded a double-double in dominating win over the Lobos

ALPINE, Texas - Tatiana Platonova etched her name in the Eastern New Mexico record books Friday night, becoming the first player in program history to record a double-double with assists as the Greyhounds dominated Sul Ross State 101-58 at the Gallego Center in Alpine.

Platonova finished with 14 points and 11 assists, orchestrating an offensive clinic that saw ENMU (8-4, 4-0 Lone Star Conference) score triple digits for the first time in a conference game since 1993. The Greyhounds' 101-point outburst matched their total from a 101-58 victory over Cameron in Portales 33 years ago.

The junior guard wasn't alone. Julieta Ceja joined Platonova with a double-double of her own, posting 12 points and 11 rebounds. The duo became the first pair of Greyhounds to record double-doubles in the same game since Alivia Lewis (14 points, 13 rebounds) and Jasmine Williams (10 points, 11 rebounds) accomplished the feat in a 66-43 win over UT Permian Basin on Jan. 30, 2020.

Toyah Montgomery provided a scoring punch with 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 2-of-5 from beyond the arc. Montgomery's efficiency was matched by Nataya Lockett, who came off the bench to score 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting while adding a steal in 17 minutes.

Jaz Salon continued her strong play as a reserve, contributing 11 points and four assists off the bench. Salon was part of a dominant bench performance that saw ENMU's reserves outscore Sul Ross State's bench, tallying 50 points.

Shay Moseberry added nine points, while Mekhila Brown and Tonka Jaksic each chipped in seven points in the victory.

The Greyhounds set the tone immediately, racing out to an 18-0 lead to start the game. ENMU's suffocating defense held Sul Ross State (1-9, 0-4 LSC) scoreless for the first 6:15 of the contest, forcing early turnovers and converting them into easy baskets in transition.

Eastern never trailed in the contest, building a 31-9 lead after the first quarter. The Greyhounds continued to pour it on in the second period, outscoring the Lobos 17-18 to take a 48-27 advantage into halftime.

The third quarter saw ENMU extend its lead to 32 points at 80-48, with the Greyhounds' balanced attack proving too much for Sul Ross State to handle. ENMU closed the game with a 21-9 run in the fourth quarter to secure the 43-point victory.

As a team, ENMU shot 36-of-75 (48.0 percent) from the field, including 12-of-34 (35.3 percent) from 3-point range. The Greyhounds dominated the glass, outrebounding Sul Ross State 51-36, and dished out 24 assists. ENMU's defense forced 23 turnovers, converting them into 32 points.

The Greyhounds' bench outscored Sul Ross State's reserves 50-13, showcasing the depth that has helped ENMU start conference play with five consecutive victories. ENMU also held a 42-18 advantage in points in the paint and scored 19 fast-break points.

The victory marked ENMU's fourth straight conference win to open Lone Star Conference play. The Greyhounds have won seven of their last eight games overall and continue to build momentum heading into the second half of the season.

Eastern New Mexico will look to extend its winning streak Sunday when the Greyhounds travel to Silver City, N.M. to face Western New Mexico at 1 p.m. MT. The Mustangs enter the contest with a 0-10 overall record and 0-4 mark in conference play.
