Greyhounds take down No. 7 West Texas A&M on the road

ENMU holds off furious Lady Buffs rally to win 61-57 in Canyon

CANYON, Texas - Chloe Dallas delivered when it mattered most, scoring 19 points and grabbing seven rebounds to lead Eastern New Mexico to a stunning 61-57 overtime victory over No. 7 West Texas A&M on Tuesday evening at First United Bank Center in Canyon.

The Greyhounds (14-9, 10-5 Lone Star Conference) withstood a furious fourth-quarter rally by the Lady Buffs (21-3, 13-2 LSC) and dominated the overtime period to secure arguably the program's biggest win of the season. ENMU led by as many as 14 points entering the final quarter before West Texas stormed back to force overtime, but the Greyhounds regrouped in the extra period to pull away for the victory.

Dallas, a senior forward, was a force on both ends of the floor in 37 minutes of action. She added two blocks and was instrumental in the Greyhounds' defensive effort down the stretch. Her clutch free-throw shooting in overtime helped seal the victory, as she converted 7-of-10 attempts from the charity stripe for the game while shooting 6-of-13 from the field.

Julieta Ceja provided a critical secondary scoring punch with 10 points and six rebounds in 36 minutes. The forward shot 4-of-11 from the floor and made 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. Her presence in the paint and ability to create second-chance opportunities were vital throughout the contest, as she contributed four assists and helped facilitate the Greyhounds' offensive flow.

Nataya Lockett came off the bench to provide a spark with nine points in 27 minutes. Lockett was perfect from the free-throw line, converting all five of her attempts, and added three rebounds.

Martrice Brooks contributed eight points and five rebounds in 32 minutes, shooting an efficient 4-of-5 from the field.

Toyah Montgomery added six points in 23 minutes of action. Montgomery connected on 2-of-5 from the field, including 1-of-2 from three-point range, and made her lone free-throw attempt. She grabbed one rebound and dished out one assist while providing perimeter shooting when the Lady Buffs collapsed on ENMU's interior players.

As a team, Eastern shot 21-of-51 (41.2 percent) from the field and struggled from beyond the arc, connecting on just 2-of-8 three-point attempts (25 percent). However, the Hounds made up for their perimeter shooting woes by dominating at the free-throw line, converting 17-of-25 attempts (78.0 percent). ENMU outrebounded West Texas A&M 39-36.

The game was a tale of momentum swings. Eastern New Mexico jumped out to an 18-11 lead after the first quarter and extended its advantage to 36-27 at halftime behind balanced scoring and aggressive defense. The Greyhounds added six points in the third quarter to take a 42-30 lead, then pushed their advantage to 46-32 entering the fourth quarter - their largest lead of the game at 14 points.

In the fourth quarter, West Texas A&M mounted a furious comeback. The Lady Buffs outscored ENMU 17-3 in the final period to tie the game at 49-49 and force overtime. The dramatic rally could have derailed the Greyhounds, but they regrouped in the extra period and played their most complete five minutes of basketball when it mattered most.

West Texas was led by Kyla Kane's 18 points and Randi Harding's 15 points, but the Lady Buffs couldn't overcome their struggles in overtime. The loss dropped West Texas A&M to 21-3 overall and 13-2 in conference play, though they remain one of the top teams in the league.

The last time ENMU defeated a conference nationally ranked opponent was on January 16, 2020, when the Greyhounds defeated No. 1 Lubbock Christian, 69-68.

Eastern will look to build on this momentum when the Greyhounds return home for their next contest. ENMU will host UT Dallas on Saturday, Feb. 14, at the Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena in Portales. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
