Greyhound baseball loses two to UT Dallas

Eastern New Mexico looks to carry some offensive production into Sunday's final matchup

DALLAS, Texas – Eastern New Mexico dropped two games to UT Dallas on Saturday afternoon.

Game 1 – UTD 12, ENMU 9
Despite earning an early 2-0 advantage, Eastern New Mexico dropped its fourth-straight game in a three-run loss to the Comets. Eastern had singles from Cole Curtis, Logan Martin, and Gabriel Watson in the opening frame. The inning finished on a ground double play – the first of two in the matchup for UT Dallas.

The Comets responded well to the Greyhounds as they took a 5-2 lead after scoring a handful of runs in the bottom of the first. ENMU would go ahead and score four runs in the second inning and held a 6-5 lead until the bottom of the third where the Javelinas ran away from the Greyhounds. Anytime the Hounds would make a response, the Javelinas put their strong foot forward to deflect any comeback opportunity.

Curtis led the team with three hits in the outing. He was joined by Logan Martin and Gabriel Watson with multi-hit days. Another player that continues to get on-base at a high rate is Eiji Sawamura who earned two walks at the plate.

Eastern relied on three different pitchers. Starter Alex Sanderson moves to 0-2 on the season after only recording two innings of action. Despite throwing six strikeouts, he still struggled with control as Landry Powell found a way to get five runs on five hits.

The two programs tied the hits battle with nine. One difference is that ENMU walked 10 batters compared to just seven for UTD. The Greyhounds did not fare well in taking advantage of scoring opportunities as they left seven runners on base.
Two Hounds had homers in the game. Gabriel Watson got the game within two scores in the fourth inning with a solo shot to deep left field. Jake Willerup hit a two-run long shot over the left field fence line later in the game.

Game 2 – UTD 9, ENMU 7
A late scoring frenzy was not enough for Eastern New Mexico as they fell to UT Dallas by two runs. The Comets were much more consistent defensively as they earned a 9-7 win over ENMU.

The Greyhounds started strong plating three runs in the opening frame. They would hold onto that lead until the fifth inning where they took a 5-4 edge. After scoring four runs in the sixth, UT Dallas made sure to close out the third win over ENMU this weekend.

Jake Willerup had two multi-base hit games for Eastern New Mexico. He posted a two-RBI double. He also connected on a three-RBI homerun in the seventh inning of the outing.

Jake Willerup, Gabriel Watson, Eiji Sawamura, and Cole Curtis all helped the program get on base multiple  this

Micah Early had one of his better pitching performances. They went five innings of work and saw Early compete with nearly 1000 total points.

Eastern New Mexico will play one more game tomorrow afternoon in Richardson before traveling back home.Â
