Willerup homers in third-straight game in loss to UT Dallas, 3-2

Eastern New Mexico baseball drops series finale to Comets

RICHARDSON, Texas – Eastern New Mexico baseball lost a narrow battle to UT Dallas to close out the series. UTD came out on top, 3-2, and clinched the sweep.

"We didn't get the big hits when we needed them," said head coach Riley Price after the game. "We pitched it better today."

For a third-straight game, Jake Willerup had a homerun. He led off the second inning with a shot to left field to give ENMU a 1-0 lead.

Charlie Pierson got the start on the mound for Eastern New Mexico. He set down the first seven batters of the game before allowing a walk and hitting a batter in the third inning. He did not allow the Comets a hit though his first 3.2 innings of work. He gave up a two-out double to Korson Hastings and allowed an RBI single as the Comets tied up the game, 1-1.

UT Dallas got to Pierson in the fifth frame as they loaded the bases after a single, walk, and defensive error. A sac-fly and hit batter with the bases full gave UTD the 3-1 advantage.

In the following inning, Demitrius DiMatteo came in a relief appearance for Pierson. DiMatteo ended up finishing the outing allowing no runs on three hits and two walks. The two pitchers combined for eight strikeouts in the loss.

Eastern's best chance to comeback from the deficit was in the seventh inning as they loaded the bases following a Salomon Lluveres walk, Isaiah Figueroa single, and Gaston Galvan hit by pitch. The Comets switched relievers and got out of the jam.

Going into the ninth, the Greyhounds were still down by two runs. Eastern began the frame with a lined shot to third base off the bat of Gabriel Watson. UTD's corner infielder didn't have to move much as he caught the ball and got out number one of the frame. Then, Ryan Weaver walked on four consecutive balls. Lluveres struck out the following at-bat and the Hounds were down to their final out. Isaiah Figueroa got his third hit of the day and kept the game alive on a blooper to shallow center field. Gaston Galvan got the Hounds within one run after a single through the left side. Weaver scored and Figueroa advanced to second base. The game ended with a deep shot to right field as Cole Curtis flew out to end the weekend series.

Eastern New Mexico will now prepare for a four-game series in Lawton, Okla. to face Cameron. Game one is scheduled for February 27.
