LAWTON, Okla. – Eastern New Mexico baseball opened the weekend with an 11-3 win over Cameron. It marks the first Greyhound win since Feb. 14 and just the second time this season scoring 10+ runs.
"We did well with our two-strike approach," stated head coach
Riley Price after the win. "He had some competitive at-bats. Our goal is to repeat that tomorrow."
Eastern took advantage of six Cameron errors. Three of those errors came in the opening frame where ENMU scored six runs to start the contest.
With a 6-0 lead, the Greyhounds stayed comfortably poised throughout the rest of the game. This allowed the team to focus on throw strikes and trust the defense to make plays when needed.
The six-run first inning featured hits from
Cole Curtis,
Adrien Martin, and
Gabriel Watson. Watson's at-bat featured a deep shot to left field for a three-RBI homer. He now has three homeruns this season.
Cole Lancaster got the start for ENMU. On the mound, he was quite effective as he sat down six of the first seven batters.
Lancaster gave up two runs on two hits in the fifth inning. Cameron hit back-to-back solo homers and got the score within four runs (6-2).
Eastern added an insurance run in the sixth with a unique play to end an inning.
Cole Curtis flew out to center field with runners on second and third. The runner at third scored, while the runner at second was noted as leaving the base early and thus being forced out on the play. The run had scored before the end of the frame and ENMU ended up with the five-run lead.
CU had an RBI-double in the sixth to be within four runs.
Eastern scored in the final two innings to secure the win over the Aggies. In the eighth, a two-RBI double from
Isaiah Figueroa got the scoring spree started. Just a few batters later,
Jake Willerup was walked with the bases loaded and earned his 18th RBI of the season.
Cole Curtis earned an RBI single with two outs in the ninth and that is how Eastern beat Cameron, 11-3.
Lancaster threw six innings and allowed three runs on two walks and six hits. He struck out a season-high six batters and earned his second win of the season.
Demitrius DiMatteo earned his first save of the season after closing the final three innings of the contest. He gave up just two hits and rolled through the Aggies lineup by striking out six of the 11 total batters he faced. The Las Cruces, N.M. native now has two career saves for the green and silver.
