KINGSVILLE, Texas – Eastern New Mexico dropped a road contest to Texas A&M-Kingsville, 83-75.
"Having 19 turnovers is a recipe for a loss," said head coach Daven Võ after Saturday's loss. "We dug ourselves in a deep hole."
The Javelinas led by as many as 18 points (33-15) midway through the first half and carried a 42-29 edge at halftime.
ENMU had a season-high 19 turnovers against TAMUK. Both
Cooper Jackson and
Mo Austin recorded five turnovers each. The five giveaways are the second most each guard has given up this season in a single game.
Texas A&M-Kingsville was able to manage the game how Eastern typically wins ball games. The Javelinas outscored Eastern in the paint, 50-46. In most games, ENMU opponents struggle with scoring in the paint, but today was a different story.
TAMUK was led by two players off the bench. Bryson Goldsmith scored 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting and David Oriaku had 11 points and four rebounds. The duo was joined by Bryce Smith who had 11 points and five assists in a starting effort.
Jose Murillo continues to be a double-double machine for ENMU as he collected 19 points and 10 rebounds. He also had three blocks, which brings his total for the last four contests to 16 blocks. He managed to go 8-for-10 from the floor despite continuous double/triple team coverage.
Treyvon Byrd was one of the most effective players for either side, but early foul trouble limited his time on the floor. The North Carolina native had 12 points with 10 coming in the second half. He picked up two fouls within the first seven minutes of the game. Byrd managed to play a good portion of the second half before fouling out with one minute remaining as he earned two fouls in less than a 50 second time period.
Cooper Jackson finished with 11 points and
Mo Austin added 10 points.
Eastern shot the ball at a high clip. They made 30-of-58 (51.7%) from the floor and made five three pointers. Another key factor was the rebounding battle as TAMUK snagged 15 offensive rebounds and turned those into 20 second chance points.
The Greyhounds now look ahead to the final homestand of the season with UT Permian Basin coming to town on Thursday and Angelo State visiting on Saturday.
