Aaliyah Smith scored a season-high 23 points and dished out six assists to lead Eastern New Mexico to a 72-67 victory over UT Permian Basin on Thursday evening at the Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena. The win extended the Greyhounds' winning streak to six games and improved their record to 18-9 overall and 14-5 in Lone Star Conference play.
The game featured nine lead changes and was tied four times, with neither team leading by more than eight points. Eastern New Mexico outscored UT Permian Basin 25-19 in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Smith was efficient from the floor, connecting on 7-of-13 field goal attempts, including a season-high four 3-pointers on eight attempts. The junior guard also added four rebounds and a steal in 32 minutes of action.
Chloe Dallas complemented Smith's performance with 16 points and five rebounds. Dallas shot 7-of-8 from the field. She scored 10 of her 16 points in the second half, helping the Hounds maintain their advantage down the stretch.
Toyah Montgomery provided a spark from long range, knocking down three 3-pointers en route to nine points. Montgomery also grabbed three rebounds and recorded three assists in 26 minutes.
The Greyhounds shot 46.4 percent from the field (26-of-56) and 36.0 percent from 3-point range (9-of-25). Eastern New Mexico was solid at the free-throw line, converting 11-of-18 attempts for 61.1 percent. The Hounds dominated the paint with 32 points and capitalized on second-chance opportunities with 11 points off offensive rebounds.
For UT Permian Basin (15-12, 10-9 LSC), Madison Walters led the Falcons with 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-9 from 3-point range. Kenadi Rising added 12 points, while Jonesha Neal contributed two points and eight rebounds. The Falcons shot 40.3 percent from the field and 40.0 percent from beyond the arc. One cool feature of the game was the lone free-throw attempt for the Falcons came before the game even started after an administrative technical foul was given to the Greyhounds. UTPB finished a perfect 1-for-1 from the line.
The Hounds also held a 13-7 advantage in fast-break points and forced 18 turnovers while committing just 15.
A crowd of 467 fans witnessed the Greyhounds' sixth consecutive victory, a streak that has positioned them in a tie for fourth place in the Lone Star Conference standings with Lubbock Christian. Both teams enter the final weekend of the regular season with identical 14-5 conference records.
Eastern New Mexico will close out the regular season on Saturday when they host Angelo State at 1 p.m. at the Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena in Portales, N.M.
