PORTALES, N.M. - The Eastern New Mexico softball team split a Lone Star Conference doubleheader with St. Mary's on Friday afternoon at Greyhound Softball Field, dropping the opener 7-5 before bouncing back to take game two, 6-4.
With the split, the Greyhounds move to 10-11 overall and 6-8 in LSC play.
Game 1: St. Mary's 7, ENMU 5
Christina Meneses led the Greyhounds with three hits and three RBIs in the opening game, but a late rally by the Rattlers proved to be the difference.
Talia Martin went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double, while
Emily Marsh also finished with a pair of hits.
Samantha Parisi,
Ana Paula Oquita and
Lorissa Scott each recorded a hit for ENMU.
Eastern jumped out to an early lead when Martin started the game with a solo home run to right field, giving the Greyhounds a 1-0 advantage after the first inning.
The Hounds extended their lead in the fifth inning when Meneses crushed a three-run home run that scored Parisi and Martin. Later in the frame, Oquita singled to center field and scored
Seneca Aarstad to give Eastern a commanding 5-0 lead after five innings.
However, St. Mary's responded with three runs in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh to complete the comeback and take game one.
In the circle,
Miranda Guillen started for Eastern and gave up four earned runs off 11 hits with six strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. Guillen suffered the loss and is now 4-4 on the season.
Angelina Rubalcava gave up three runs off three hits in relief.
Game 2: ENMU 6, St. Mary's 4
Aarstad led the Greyhounds with three hits and three RBIs in the nightcap, while
Marissa Rodriguez went 2-for-3 with a run scored to help Eastern even the doubleheader.
ENMU manufactured four runs off three hits in the third inning to take a 4-1 lead. The Rattlers responded with three runs in the third inning to tie the game at 4-4, but Aarstad answered with a go-ahead solo home run in the fourth inning to put the Greyhounds back on top.
Eastern added an insurance run in the sixth inning when
Destiny Johnston was called in to pinch hit and delivered a blooper over the first baseman down the right field line to score
Aubrey Jaramillo, giving the Hounds a comfortable 6-4 advantage in their final at-bat.
Rodriguez went the distance in the circle for Eastern, giving up four runs off seven hits while recording two strikeouts. Rodriguez earned the win and improved to 5-0 on the season.
The Greyhounds will return to action Saturday when they host St. Edward's (8-17, 5-9 LSC) for a doubleheader scheduled for a 2 p.m. start at Greyhound Softball Field.
