Greyhounds sweep Midwestern State in doubleheader

ENMU extends win streak to five games with dominant road victories

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The Eastern New Mexico softball team extended its winning streak to five games with a dominant doubleheader sweep over Midwestern State on Friday afternoon at Mustangs Park, winning 11-2 and 13-1 in a pair of five-inning contests.

The Greyhounds improved to 14-11 overall and 10-8 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Mustangs fell to 4-22 overall and 2-16 in LSC action.

Game 1: ENMU 11, Midwestern State 2 (5 inn.)

Eastern New Mexico wasted little time establishing control in the opening game, building an early lead and never looking back en route to the nine-run victory.

The Greyhounds struck first in the top of the second inning. Emily Marsh led off with a double before advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt from Ana Paula Oquita. Lorissa Scott followed with an RBI single to center field, plating Marsh to give ENMU a 1-0 advantage.

The floodgates opened in the top of the third as Eastern scored six runs on three hits while taking advantage of two Midwestern State errors to build a commanding 7-0 lead. The Mustangs responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 7-2, but the Greyhounds answered emphatically in the top of the fourth.

ENMU tacked on four more runs in the fourth inning, collecting three hits from Marissa Rodriguez, Oquita and Talia Martin to push the lead to 11-2 and invoke the run rule.

Marsh paced the Greyhounds' offensive attack, finishing 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Samantha Parisi also recorded three hits, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Oquita contributed two hits and two RBIs, while Martin, Rodriguez and Scott each added a hit in the victory.

In the circle, Miranda Guillen delivered her second consecutive complete game for Eastern New Mexico. The right-hander scattered four hits while allowing two runs and striking out eight Mustangs to improve to 6-4 on the season.

Game 2: ENMU 13, Midwestern State 1 (5 inn.)

The Greyhounds carried their momentum into the nightcap, exploding for five runs in the top of the first inning to set the tone early.

Eastern sent nine batters to the plate in the opening frame, collecting five hits from Parisi (2), Martin, Giazza Lopez and Rodriguez to build a 5-0 lead and force a Midwestern State pitching change. The Mustangs answered with a run in the bottom of the first to trim the deficit to 5-1, but that would be as close as they would get.

ENMU added single runs in both the third and fourth innings to extend the advantage to 7-1. Rodriguez provided the highlight in the third, launching a solo home run to center field and third on the season. The Greyhounds then put the game away with a six-run explosion in the fifth inning, collecting five hits to take a 13-1 lead and end the contest via run rule.

Martin, Parisi and Lopez each recorded doubles for the Greyhounds, while Rodriguez provided the power with her home run.

Parisi led the offensive charge with three hits and an RBI. Christina Meneses went 1-for-3 with four RBIs, while Rodriguez finished 3-for-3 with four RBIs and Lopez contributed two hits and three RBIs in the victory.

Rodriguez also dominated in the circle, pitching her second consecutive complete game for Eastern. The ace scattered six hits while allowing just one run and striking out one batter to improve to a perfect 7-0 on the season.

The Greyhounds will continue their road trip with a doubleheader at Lubbock Christian on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. MT / 1 p.m. CT at Maner Park in Lubbock, Texas.
