PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico split Saturday's doubleheader with Sul Ross State. SRSU took game one before Eastern found a way to earn their first win of the weekend in the nightcap.
Game One - SRSU 9, ENMU 6
Sul Ross State earned their third victory of the season after opening today's doubleheader with a 9-6 result. The highlight of the game for SRSU came from a six-run first inning.
"Going into this weekend, we knew they were going to swing it," said head coach
Riley Price. "We were not able to minimize that big inning. I don't think
Charlie Pierson had his best stuff out of the gate. He wasn't hitting spots and they took advantage of that."
The first six Lobo batters got on base with a hit – four singles and a pair of doubles. Sul Ross State saw seven different players record a hit in the inning and they took a 6-0 lead going into the bottom of the frame.
SRSU held ENMU scoreless over the first two frames retiring the one-thru-six hitters in order. The third inning was where ENMU took advantage of opportunities at the plate.
Logan Martin broke the no-hitter for SRSU by driving a double down the left field line to lead off the third. Eastern loaded the bases after a
Grant Gilooly walk and a hit by pitch for Eiji Sawmura. With two outs, a
Salomon Lluveres bases loaded walk gave ENMU their first run of the day. On the next at-bat,
Gabriel Watson battled through a full count and hit a grand slam to deep center field. SRSU led 6-5 after the third.
The Lobos would tack on a run in the fifth and two more in the seventh. The Greyhounds last push came in the bottom of the seventh. Adrien got on base with a lead off walk and found his way home after a
Logan Martin one-out double. ENMU would get runners on the corners with two outs, but SRSU closed out the game and beat Eastern for a second-straight game.
Game Two – ENMU 16, SRSU 10
Eastern New Mexico got back on track with a 16-10 win in Saturday's second game of the doubleheader. The win was aided by a major second inning that saw ENMU score a dozen runs and a commanding outing from
Cole Lancaster.
"Cole (Lancaster) threw an outstanding game," said head coach
Riley Price after the game. "We were the team that scored when guys were in position to score. My challenge to them is to salvage the weekend and be ready to swing."
Despite getting three hits in the first inning, ENMU did not get any runners to cross home. Instead, the Hounds saw a majority of their offensive output in the second frame.
The second inning was the major story of the game. SRSU took a 1-0 lead going into the bottom half of the second and ENMU responded with their most runs scored in a single inning all year.
The bottom of the inning began with an early strikeout. That is when the craziness began to ensue. The next 11 Greyhounds reached base. ENMU scored nine runs with just one out. Eastern would add another three runs with two outs. Both
Eiji Sawamura (two doubles) and
Salomon Lluveres (single, triple) had two hits in the inning alone. At the end of the second, ENMU led 12-1.
Both teams went scoreless over the next two innings leading up to another opportunity for ENMU to increase their lead. That is exactly what they did in the fifth.
Salomon Lluveres and
Gabriel Watson kicked off the frame with a pair of walks. With one-out,
Isaiah Figueroa had an RBI-single.
Adrien Martin continued the scoring frenzy with an RBI-single of his own.
Nicholas Miller came up clutch with a two-RBI double to give the Hounds a 16-1 lead going into the final two innings.
The Lobos did not let the 15-run deficit halt their sights on a comeback. SRSU scored eight runs on five hits in the sixth inning and cut the ENMU lead to seven runs. The visitor's did not allow the Hounds to tally any runs in the sixth and set their focus on the final frame. Sul Ross State did get one run in the seventh, but the late rally came to a close and Eastern New Mexico pulled off their first win of the weekend.
Eastern New Mexico finished the game with 14 hits.
Eiji Sawamura had a team-best three hits and three RBI's.
Salomon Lluveres,
Cole Curtis,
Adrien Martin, and
Nicholas Miller all had multihit outings. Both
Gabriel Watson and
Ryan Weaver proved to be patient at the plate as they finished with two walks and a hit.
Cole Lancaster improved to 5-3 on the season. He threw 90+ pitches over 5.0 innings and allowed six runs on five hits. He struck out six Lobos. Lancaster has picked up a win in four consecutive outings. It is his sixth appearance going 5.0 innings or more.
Eastern New Mexico will now prepare for the series finale with the Lobos set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
