Greyhound baseball secures series win over Oklahoma Christian

Eastern New Mexico baseball wins both games on Saturday over Eagles

EDMOND, Okla. – Eastern New Mexico baseball is now on a five-game winning streak after a pair of dominating performances against Oklahoma Christian on Saturday evening. ENMU put up a 15-11 win over the Eagles in game one and followed that with a 20-9 victory.

Game One ENMU 15 OC 11
Similarities on the scoreboard took place during the first game of the day for ENMU and OC. Both programs repeated Friday's early first inning scoring frenzy by adding four runs apiece in the opening frame.

"We hit the ball like I know we can," said head coach Riley Price after the pair of wins. "Oklahoma Christian is a team that can pitch well and they threw a few arms that have done some good things this season."

The Greyhounds got it done with three-straight hits to begin the game. Eiji Sawamura (single), Cole Curtis (double), and Gabriel Watson (2-RBI double) were responsible for the early runs with no outs. Jake Willerup would get on base safely via the first of five errors committed by the home side. Isaiah Figueroa had a successful ground out that advanced a run home. Lastly, Logan Martin had an RBI-double to extend the lead to 4-0.

On the other side of the first inning, ENMU allowed two hits and three walks. That allowed OC to tie up the game and send it to the following frame.

In the second, ENMU continued their solid performance at the plate. They scored another four runs. This time it came on three hits and two walks. With an 8-4 edge, ENMU would keep the lead the rest of the game.

Oklahoma Christian would score a run in six of the seven innings of the game. The only frame where they were left scoreless was in the second. The difference was that ENMU scored multiple runs in five of the seven innings. The Hounds were held scoreless in the third and fourth.

Eastern New Mexico hit for power in the win as they capitalized on four home runs. Gabriel Wayson became just the second Hound this season to have two homers in a single game. Nicholas Miller hit his first homer of the season and Eiji Sawamura showcased his speed with an inside-the-park homer.

Watson and Sawamura were so influential for Eastern New Mexico that they combined for 10 of the team's 18 total hits. Watson finished with two homers, two singles, and a double. The power hitter had a team best seven RBI's. Sawamura had three singles, a double, and a homer. The Japan native had a team-high five runs.

Gaston Galvan had his best game offensively this season. He had a season-best three hits, including his first double of the year. He got on base four times in the win as he also recorded a walk. He improved his batting average from .227 to .271 based on his 3-for-4 outing.

Five different Hounds had a double in the victory. Cole Curtis and Logan Martin joined the aforementioned Galvan, Sawamura, and Watson with the extra base hit. Another key stat was that ENMU was walked eight times. Adrien Martin led the program with three walks to his credit.

Cole Lancaster improved to 6-3 on the season. He threw 4.2 innings allowing nine runs on six hits and five walks. He struck out two batters. Zach Raichel finished the fifth inning by getting the final out. Alexander Sanderson closed out the final two frames. He allowed one run on three hits.

The Eagles threw four different arms in the loss. All four tossed 30+ pitches and allowed multiple runs. Corbin Kwan was credited with the loss. He only went three innings giving up nine runs on nine hits and two walks. Kwan came into the game with a 5.25 ERA and left with a 7.00 ERA after the less than desirable outing. The four pitchers combined for seven strikeouts.

Game Two ENMU 20 OC 9
The second game was slightly different offensively. Emphasis on slightly.

"It was a good day," said Price when reflecting on the overall day. "We did well at minimizing on defense and supporting through our bats."

Eastern New Mexico and Oklahoma Christian remained tied at zero over the opening two innings despite ENMU stranding four runners over the opening two frames, including leaving the bases loaded in the second.

The scoring began in the third inning in a very rare circumstance. Cole Curtis opened the inning with a homerun. That was followed by a homer by Gabriel Watson. Directly after, Jake Willerup hit a homerun for himself. Eastern New Mexico hit back-to-back-to-back homeruns to begin the third frame. It is unknown if that is the first time ever for ENMU. What is known is that it is the first time since 2011. Sports information staff will look more into the exact record over the coming days.

The offensive outburst continued as Adrien Martin and Isaiah Figueroa had back-to-back singles. The Hounds loaded the bases with a Logan Martin walk. Nicholas Miller drove in two runners off a basehit. The bases were loaded once more after a Miller steal and Riley Hall getting on after getting hit by a pitch.

Those first five runs scored with no outs. The second out brought in L. Martin home on a sac-fly. With two outs, ENMU proceeded to score an additional four runs. A two-RBI double from Jake Willerup and a two-RBI single from Adrien Martin did just the trick.

Despite carrying a 10-0 lead, ENMU allowed six runs to OC in the third. After the inning, the Greyhounds led 10-6. The third lasted 58 minutes from start to finish and featured a combined 16 runs, 10 hits, and six walks.

Eastern New Mexico would add five more runs in the third. The frame featured singles from Logan Martin, Eiji Sawamura, Cole Curtis (RBI), and Adrien Martin (RBI). Gunner Ferguson also posted the first double of his Greyhound career as he drove in two runs. Jake Willerup added a run for ENMU on a sac-fly in the inning.

ENMU would score one run in the fifth, one in the sixth, and three in the seventh. It's the fourth-straight season where Eastern New Mexico has scored 20+ runs in a game at least once. One area where the Hounds left additional opportunities on the table is that they finished with 12 runners left on base.

Adrien Martin and Logan Martin led the team with four hits each. Isaiah Figueroa, Cole Curtis, and Jake Willerup each had two hits in the victory. Nicholas Miller tallied three of the team's 10 walks on the day.

Nick Mooney got the start for the Greyhounds. He allowed six runs on four hits and four walks over 2.2 innings. Maddux Edmonson came into relief for Mooney. Edmonson earned his first collegiate victory after going 2.1 innings and allowing just one run on three hits and a walk. Micah Early closed out the game facing nine batters over the final two innings.

Eastern New Mexico has now won five consecutive games. They look to get their first sweep of the season with another game against Oklahoma Christian tomorrow.
