ALPINE, Texas -Â The Eastern New Mexico softball team swept Sul Ross State in a Lone Star Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon at Lobo Softball Field, winning 2-1 in game one and 11-7 in game two to improve to 9-8 overall and 5-5 in LSC play.
The Hounds extended their all-time series dominance over the Lobos to 6-0 with the sweep.
Game 1: ENMU 2, Sul Ross State 1
Marissa Rodriguez delivered the game-winning blow in the sixth inning, launching a two-run home run to lift the Hounds past the Lobos 2-1. Rodriguez finished 1-for-1 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored.
Christina Meneses paced the ENMU offense with a 2-for-3 performance, while
Samantha Parisi added a hit in the victory.
Miranda Guillen turned in a complete-game gem in the circle for Eastern, improving to 4-2 on the season. The right-hander scattered six hits and allowed just one run while walking five and striking out eight batters over seven innings of work.
Sul Ross State grabbed an early 1-0 lead after the first inning and held the Hounds scoreless through five frames before Rodriguez's sixth-inning heroics gave ENMU the lead for good.
Game 2: ENMU 11, Sul Ross State 7
The Hounds wasted no time in game two, exploding for eight runs in the opening inning to seize control early. Eastern tallied three hits in the frame and left three runners on base while building an 8-0 advantage.
Emily Marsh led the offensive onslaught, going 3-for-4 with four RBI to pace the Hounds.
Samantha Parisi and
Seneca Aarstad each collected two hits, while
Natalie Rodarte and
Talia Martin added one hit apiece.
Sul Ross State battled back with a run in the bottom of the first, two in the second, and one in the fourth to trim the deficit to 8-4. However, ENMU added two insurance runs in the fifth inning and tacked on a final run in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.
Marissa Rodriguez earned the win in the circle, improving to 2-1 on the season. Rodriguez pitched 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits while walking two batters.
Angelina Rubalcava provided relief for the Hounds, surrendering three runs on two hits and two walks.
Eastern New Mexico will travel to Silver City for a doubleheader against Western New Mexico on Sunday, March 8. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. noon at the WNMU softball field.
