DBU's buzzer beater clinches conference title over ENMU

Eastern New Mexico men's basketball falls in LSC championship game, now focuses on prep for regional

FRISCO, Texas – Déjà vu is a tricky sensation especially when it comes to sports. DBU won the 2026 Lone Star Conference tournament title, 76-74, over Eastern New Mexico on Sunday afternoon at the Comerica Center thanks to a buzzer beater basket from Trevor Frank.

"They returned the favor on us," said head coach Daven Võ after referencing the buzzer beater shot to win the game.

The favor that Võ was referring to was the three-point basket by Cooper Jackson who hit a buzzer beater of his own at Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena earlier this year. On Sunday, it was the Patriots who came out on top thanks to an exhilarating shot in the closing seconds.

Eastern New Mexico got off to a hot start as they led by as many as six points in the contest prior to the first media timeout of the game. However, DBU would pick up the intensity and find a way to take a lead of their own. The Patriots would utilize an 8-0 run to hold a 27-21 edge just ten minutes into the game.

When the Patriots looked to be at their best, Jose Murillo ended up having one of his many highlight plays directly after. Murillo ran the floor in transition after a Mo Austin steal and slam dunked the ball for an "and-one" three-point play. Murillo guided Eastern with a team-best 16 points and nine rebounds.

The game continued to go back-and-forth throughout the rest of the first half. Eastern would take a brief lead, but the Patriots were the ones with a five-point lead going into the intermission.

The one-seeded DBU program kept up the pace in the second half by taking a 54-46 lead just five minutes into the second half. However, the Greyhounds kept a "no quit" mindset. The Greyhounds utilized an impressive 15-2 stretch guided by back-to-back trey's from Elijah Hollins and strong post play by Murillo and Treyvon Byrd. With 10:15 left, the Hounds were the ones with a 61-56 edge.

Both programs played gritty. A dozen different lead changes highlighted the contest between the Lone Star Conference's two best teams. DBU made one last late push and took a 74-70 lead with just over one minute left. It looked all, but over for the Greyhounds seeking their third LSC title. However, a layup by Byrd and clutch free throws from Cooper Jackson tied the contest with five seconds left. That is when DBU pulled off the floating deep two-pointer to seal the deal against the Hounds.

Hollins (14 pts), Byrd (12 pts), and Jackson (11 pts) all had double figure numbers for Eastern. At the end of the tournament, Mo Austin and Cooper Jackson were named to the all-tournament team.

Two main stat lines where Eastern typically controls did not prove to be the case on Sunday. ENMU went 25-for-59 (42.4%) from the floor and the Hounds were outscored in the paint, 46-32.

Eastern New Mexico found out their destiny for next week's south central regional. They will play St. Mary's in the 2-7 matchup on Saturday, March 14. More information will be provided as it comes available.
