PORTALES, N.M. - Eastern New Mexico split a doubleheader with Texas Woman's on Wednesday afternoon at the Greyhound Softball Field, winning the opener, 12-6, before dropping the nightcap, 9-1.
Game 1: ENMU 12, Texas Woman's 6
The Greyhounds jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, scoring three runs to take a 3-0 advantage. Texas Woman's answered with a run in the second to cut the deficit to 3-1.
ENMU extended its lead in the bottom of the third when
Kayla Campbell hit a 2 RBI double down the left field line, scoring
Talia Martin and
Haleigh Pearce. The Greyhounds plated two runs in the frame to take a 5-1 lead.
The Pioneers battled back in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs to tie the game at 5-5. Marissa Espinoza and Tamia Cherry stole bases before Hawwa Townsend doubled to shallow right field, driving in two runs. Madison Lux singled up the middle to keep the rally going before the Pioneers completed the four-run inning.
However, ENMU regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double from Martin to go up 6-5, but Texas Woman's tied the game again at 6-6 with a run in the top of the sixth.
The Greyhounds broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth with six runs. Martin reached base with her third double of the game before
Angelina Rubalcava laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Martin to third. Pearce reached on a fielder's choice bunt, driving in Martin to give ENMU a 7-6 lead.
Kayla Campbell walked before
Samantha Parisi singled to left field.
Christina Meneses then walked with bases loaded to force in a run, making it 8-6.
Marissa Rodriguez then singled down the left field line, driving in two more runs to extend the lead to 10-6.
Natalie Rodarte scored Meneses and Rodriguez with a shot over the Pioneers center fielders head to give the Hounds a commanding 12-6 advantage.
ENMU held Texas Woman's scoreless in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.
Rodarte led the Greyhounds at the plate, going 4-for-5 with 4 RBIs while Parisi went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Meneses went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, an RBI and three walks. Martin was 3-for-5 with three doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs and Rodriguez went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
Miranda Guillen started in the circle for ENMU, pitching 3.1 innings and allowing five runs on eight hits with five strikeouts. Rubalcava earned the win, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing one run on five hits. Rodriguez pitched one inning, allowing no runs on two hits.
Game 2: Texas Woman's 9, ENMU 1
Eastern scored its lone run in the bottom of the second inning when Meneses launched a solo home run to deep center field to give the Hounds a 1-0 lead.
The game remained 1-0 until the Pioneers broke through with five runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.
Texas Woman's then added four more runs in the sixth inning to extend its advantage to 9-1.
Meneses finished a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI for the Greyhounds.
Emily Marsh and Parisi each added a hit for ENMU.
Rodriguez started in the circle for ENMU and pitched 4.1 innings, allowing three runs off seven hits and three strikeouts. Rodriguez is now 7-1 on the season.
Jordan Rivera pitched in relief, allowing two runs.
Cierra Smith pitched 0.2 innings, allowing one run on zero hits with one strikeout and two walks. Guillen pitched the final inning, allowing three runs on two hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
Eastern will be back in action on Friday, April 3, against two-time defending national champions UT Tyler. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the Greyhound Softball Field in Portales.
