UT Tyler sweeps Eastern New Mexico softball in Friday doubleheader

PORTALES, N.M. - Eastern New Mexico softball dropped a doubleheader at the Greyhounds Softball Field on Friday, falling to UT Tyler 9-4 in game one and 12-1 in game two in six innings.

Game 1: UTT 9, ENMU 4

The Patriots wasted no time establishing control in the opening game, plating four runs in the first inning to grab an early 4-0 advantage. However, the Greyhounds responded with a four-run second inning to knot the score at 4-4.

Talia Martin provided the spark for Eastern with a two-run home run after Angelina Rubalcava drew a walk. The Hounds capitalized on a fielding error by UT Tyler shortstop Kaelyn Lerma to push across two additional runs in the bottom of the second.

UT Tyler regained the lead with two runs in the fourth inning and added three insurance runs in the fifth to secure the 9-4 victory.

Martin, Rubalcava, Samantha Parisi, Christina Meneses, Marissa Rodriguez and Lorissa Scott each recorded a hit for the Greyhounds. Martin's home run was the only extra-base hit for Eastern.

Rodriguez started in the circle for the Greyhounds, surrendering four runs on three hits while walking two batters. Rubalcava (2-4) pitched 4.0 innings in relief, allowing five runs on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Giazza Lopez closed out the final 2.1 innings, holding the Patriots scoreless while recording one strikeout.

Game 2: UTT 12, ENMU 1 (6 inn.)

In game two, UT Tyler jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. The Patriots added a single run in the fourth before breaking the game open with three runs in the fifth and five in the sixth to build a 12-0 advantage.

Eastern scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Meneses drew a walk and advanced to third on a double down the left-field line by Lopez. Seneca Aarstad then drove in Meneses with a hard-hit ground ball to first base.

Miranda Guillen started in the circle for the Greyhounds and surrendered six runs on four hits over 4.0 innings. Guillen struck out four batters and walked four. Cierra Smith allowed six runs on three hits with one strikeout in relief. Jordan Rivera and Lopez also pitched in relief for Eastern.

Eastern New Mexico will be back in action on the road on April 10 at Oklahoma Christian.
