Runs, runs, and more runs highlight wild night at Greyhound Baseball Field

Eastern New Mexico and Angelo State combine for 43 runs in record setting style Friday evening

PORTALES, N.M. – A rare feat highlighted the series opener for Eastern New Mexico and Angelo State Friday night at Greyhound Baseball. The Rams and Greyhounds combined for 43 runs in a 26-17 matchup that went in favor of ASU.

"It was a game about minimizing and we did not do that defensively," said head coach Riley Price after the high-scoring affair. "They put the ball in play and don't strikeout a lot."

Angelo State tied the second most runs they have scored in a single game in program history. It marks the fourth time in school history that they have scored 25 or more runs in a game versus ENMU. They also broke a 20-year old record for most hits in a game with 30 total.

ASU earned 15 of their runs in the first three innings of the game, including 10 coming in the top of the second. The 10-run half frame took nearly 40 minutes to complete and saw the Rams earn 11 hits. One key stat is that the visitor's earned eight of their 11 hits in two-strike situations during that second inning.

Despite the early craziness, ENMU found a way to push three safely in the first and another four in the second.

Both teams were kept scoreless in the following set of at-bats with a pair of 1-2-3 frames. The rarity did not stay as Eastern New Mexico tacked on another run in the fourth to get the game within eight (15-8). Cole Curtis had his first of two triples on the night and later scored on a ground out from Adrien Martin.

The fifth is where the wild became even more wild. A normal breezy day in Portales turned into gusting winds that would stay for the remainder of the game. Both teams battled through the gusty situation and the game became plenty interesting to say the least.

ASU scored one run in the fifth on a bases loaded hit by pitch. The Greyhounds responded with a six-run fifth inning. What was once a 13-3 deficit in the second inning became a 16-14 edge in favor of the Rams. The Hounds offensive output was carried by hits from Logan Martin (single), Nicholas Miller (single), Isaiah Figueroa (double), Eiji Sawamura (double), Adrien Martin (single), and Gabriel Watson (single). Angelo State also committed two consecutive errors defensively to help ENMU's cause.

The Rams answered well in the sixth as they plated four runs in the sixth. With a 20-14 lead in the seventh, the seventh-inning stretch provided another extra push for the Hounds. They scored three runs in the bottom of the frame thanks to a wild pitch from ASU's Jude Stephens and an RBI-double from Logan Martin. That would be the final score for ENMU on the night. The visitors would add three runs in the following two innings to take the 26-17 victory.

Every Ram had a multi-hit game in the win. Both first baseman Chase Pendley and second baseman Austin Beck had five hits in the contest. ASU had eight pitchers to carry the way in Portales. David Dressendorfer got his first win of the season and had the longest outing on the team with 2.2 innings thrown.

As for the Greyhounds, Demitrius DiMatteo took the loss after allowing 13 runs (12 earned) on 13 hits. He threw strikes consistently, but ASU was able to find ways to put the ball in play and find gaps in the infield. ENMU threw four other relievers in the loss.

All, but one Greyhound starter had a hit the game. Logan Martin and Eiji Sawamura led the way with three hits each. Every starter scored at least one run for the team.

Both teams will be back in action for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at Greyhound Baseball Field. More information can be found at www.goeasternathletics.com.
