WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS – Sophomore right side hitter
Lauren Frye (Amissville, Va./Highland School) had a match-high eight kills as the Eastern New Mexico volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-15) to Midwestern State Tuesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Zias drop to 8-9 overall and 3-5 in Lone Star Conference play while the Mustangs are now 6-12 and 2-6 in the conference.
With the first set tied 5-5, MSU won the next four points before a timeout was called by Eastern. The Zias fought back and tied score at 16 on a kill by Frye from senior setter
Kennedi Catano (Amarillo, Texas/Tascosa HS).
After the Mustangs went up by two, kills by junior right side hitter
Talaitupu Faumui (West Jordan, Utah/Western Texas College) and Frye knotted the set at 18-18. MSU went on to take seven of the final 10 points in the set to go up 1-0.
The Mustangs led the entire way in the second set. While ENMU hit .205 with 14 kills, MSU recorded an attack percentage of .448 with 14 kills and one error.
A service ace by freshman defensive specialist
Andrea Aguilar (Clovis, N.M./Clovis HS) gave Eastern a 5-4 advantage in the third set. Eight straight points went to the Mustangs until a kill by sophomore outside hitter
Courtney Lawson (Rio Rancho, N.M./V. Sue Cleveland HS) ended the streak.
With the set seeming in hand, the Zias fought back with a 7-1 run to cut their deficit to 13-12. MSU's defense stepped up as they forced eight attack errors over the final 15 points of the set.
Frye ended the match hitting a team-high .353 while senior outside hitter
Lindsey Barron (Mandeville, La./Central Arkansas) added seven kills. Sophomore libero
Lindsay Bost (Rio Rancho, N.M./V. Sue Cleveland HS) finished with 13 digs and two service aces.
Eastern finishes their road trip Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. MT against Cameron.
