Gibbons’ Career Night Leads Zias to Sweep of Mustangs

HOBBS, N.M. – Senior Agatha Gibbons had a career night as the Eastern New Mexico volleyball team swept the University of the Southwest 25-16, 25-9, 25-23 Monday night at the Maddox Student Life Center. Gibbons recorded a career-high 16 kills which matched the Mustangs total for the entire contest.
 
The Zias improve to 12-13 on the season while USW drops to 7-20.
 
In the first set, the teams traded the lead once and saw the score tied two times until ENMU pulled away. The Zias hit .483 with 17 kills while holding the Mustangs to only six kills and a .040 attack percentage. Freshman Brooklyn Biel was a perfect 4-for-4 attacking during the set.
 
USW won two of the first three points in set two. A 6-1 run by Eastern that was started by back-to-back kills by Gibbons put them ahead for good. The Mustangs managed to cut the score to 12-6 but the Zias outscored USW 13-3 the rest of the way.
 
With the score tied after the first 10 points of the third set, ENMU went on a 9-2 burst to take the lead. Sophomore Courtney Lawson helped the Zias' cause with consecutive service errors during the run.
 
The Mustangs fought back and closed the game to one twice with the last coming at 24-23 following a Zia service error. Closing the match with her 16th kill of the contest was Gibbons.
 
Biel posted seven kills with a season-high .455 attack percentage while playing in just two sets. Senior Kennedi Catano had a match-high 20 assists while fellow classmate was credited with 10. Freshman Tiana Roebuck had five assists in her first collegiate action.
 
Defensively, freshman Andrea Aguilar recorded 19 digs. Gibbons added three blocks with two of them being solo. Lucero also posted three rejections while sophomore Lauren Frye was a part of two herself.
 
Eastern hit .280 with 39 kills while USW could only must 16 kills and recorded a -.053 attack percentage. The Zias also held a 6-2 block advantage.
 
This weekend, ENMU is back on the road for the final time in the regular season when they travel to face Tarleton State at 5 p.m. MT on Friday.
