Carnero Nets Game-Winner as Women's Soccer Rolls Past Falcons

Tuesday, October 13, 2015

PORTALES, N.M. — Melissa Carnero tallied her third goal of the season 34:26 into play and the Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team (4-8-1) never looked back en-route to a 3-0 win over visiting University of Texas of the Permian Basin (2-9-1), Tuesday afternoon at ENMU Soccer Field. The win snapped a four-game skid for the Hounds.

The victory improved Eastern to 7-2 against the Falcons in the first meeting since the 2011 season. The Hounds have posted a 9-5 record at home in the last two seasons.

Eastern thoroughly dominated the contest and held a 14-4 edge in total shots, which included a 9-1 lead in the first half. The Hounds also had all six corner kicks in the game.

With just under 10 minutes left in the opening half, Carnero took a pass from Baylee Hampton and beat a defender to give ENMU the 1-0 lead. The goal was her first since she scored her second goal of the season in a 4-1 win over Texas A&M-International.

Carnero wasted little time at the start of the second half, beating two defenders and firing a pass to Carolyn Armijo, who tallied her first goal of the season, 3:44 into the period. Tori Hendrickson added to Eastern's lead with her second goal over the season, after a throw-in from Jenna Sievers.

Cristina Escobedo made two saves to notch the first win of her career, while Ebony Campbell made eight saves for the Falcons. Carnero and Sievers had each three shots for the Hounds, which included two on goal.

The Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team will continue its home stand on Friday, against fifth-ranked Angelo State. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. MT.
