PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico University men's soccer team fell to 4-6-2 on the season Monday after a close fought match against Lubbock Christian University, losing 2-0.
The Chaps (5-6-2) scored in the open minutes of the match off a miscue by the Greyhound defense. An unguarded LCU player received a cross from the right side of the box for an open header off the right post.
What followed saw the Greyhounds continuously pressed on defense, with LCU recording shot after shot. 22 minutes into the match, the Chaps would find the back of the net again off a double assist.
Head coach Paul Tate said, "We just need to play soccer. We were lackadaisical out there. It's hard to give up early goals and try and fight back the whole game."
ENMU did make some halftime adjustments and played a much better second half. Carlos Viveros and Ryan McManus both had their fair of chances in the second half, recording two and three shots respectively, but could never manage to find the back of the net.
The Greyhounds did record 11 shots to LCU's 13. Both of Viveros' shots were on goal and ENMU as a team recorded five. James Gutierrez recorded four saves on the day.
"We just have to put it together from the start," said Tate. "We seem to do a good job of winning the second half most times we play, but we need to put together a complete game."
The Greyhounds will take to the road to play West Texas A&M University Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
