CANYON, TEXAS — The Eastern New Mexico University men's soccer team had their opportunities but couldn't manage to stop an aggressive West Texas A&M University team from outscoring them 2-1 Wednesday.
The Buffaloes (9-4) scored just under two minutes into the game off a Greyhound (4-7-2) defensive miscue, allowing a WT defender to slip in on a free kick from 25 yards out and get a header for the first score of the game.
After much back and forth for the remainder of the first half, ENMU came out as the aggressors and scored in the 54th minute. A Greyhound corner led to a Cesar Quintero goal and a Ryan McManus assist. The goal was Quintero's second of the season.
Quintero said, "I wasn't going to go in the box originally, but we got a flick from one of the guys and I was able to finish it."
The final score of the game 30 seconds after the ENMU goal, when a WT forward managed to slip past the Greyhound defense. James Gutierrez challenged the play, but a quick move left the Buffs a wide open goal for the go-ahead score, 2-1.
ENMU will return home for their final game in Portales this season, Sunday, at 12:00 p.m. The Hounds will take on St. Mary's University(TX), who beat Eastern earlier in the year 3-1 in San Antonio, Texas.
